F2B/F1X Comparison samples for download
« on: November 24, 2019, 01:52:07 AM »
I just recorded some comparison sound samples with the F2B and F1X.

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1CuFXYFLe1-BKiwT0gQL0kSLRXLQKBhwv

Setting:
1980 Series 1 (both pu, max filters, Q@0db)> DS5 > F2B/F1X > Universal Audio Apollo Twin > Logic Pro X > 24/48 Wav

Each sample is F2B first then F1X second.

The current test settings are as follows.
2-10-2
2-10-2 brt
5-5-5
5-5-5 brt

F1X is recorded through the full range out.

My observation is that to achieve unity gain between F2B and F1X, I had to have the volume on the F2B around 2.8 and the F1X at 5. The F1X also had significant volume loss when set to 5-5-5.

Let me know if you guys want any more samples. I have an SF2 that I sample also.

Thanks!

Great sounding samples. To me the F-2B is warmer fuller sounding with slightly more bottom end than the F-1x. Thr bass sounds great though. Thanks for taking the time to do those. And Cissy Strut is good solid bassline to demo with.

Thanks for the feedback! I feel the F2B is more tubey. And yea, I figured I would just play a bassline that everyone is farmiliar with for demoing purposes.

Thanks for posting!  As Jazzyvee mentioned, the F-2b sounds a little warmer on all of the settings.  Do both preamps have the same tube in them?  Have you tried the deep switch on the F-1X?  I use the deep switch often.  Sounds great and a nice comparison...thanks!

I'll have to say that I'm surprised at how different they really are. The F-2B is markedly warmer, tubier. There are still a few variables but this is a very good A/B test.  8)

*it occurs to me, Rob's idea about the deep switch might be just the ticket to correct some of the disparity. The F-2B doesn't have them on either channel if I remember correctly, so maybe this was part of the design with the F-1X?

I do not have the same kind of tubes in both preamps. The F1X has 1950’s GE tubes. The F2B is new from the mothership which I do not know what kind it is. The deep switch on the F1X I have used on a few recordings but I usually leave that off.

Thanks!

Thanks for the comparison. The difference in tubes between the two preamps could be at least partially responsible for the difference in sound.

I have never had the chance to directly compare both preamps but expected that if I did the F-2B would sound a bit warmer and tubier as Jack's samples show. The presence of a deep switch on the F-1X led me to conjecture that the F-1X would not have quite the same bass response as an F-2B which has quite a bit of low end available, I can't really imagine the need for a deep switch on an F-2B.

Thanks for taking the time to record the samples!

I will jump on the F-2B boat... it is rounder sounding where the F-1X is more ‘focused’.  If that makes sense.
I can see where  there could be an application for each.
