EARTHQUAKE!
« on: October 14, 2019, 11:05:33 PM »
We just had a 4.5 centered in the East Bay.  Quick with a big jolt!  Thankfully there appears to have been little damage.  Still, possibly the strongest I’ve felt since ‘89.

Keep them guitars in their cases!  Taking a header off a guitar stand when the earth is quakin’ could be real bad.

I felt it up here! about 3 seconds of minor jiggling. Reported it to the USGS, 12th one. Checked 15 minutes later - 27K reports. We were one of the farthest away to feel as of the reports now. 4.5 at the epicenter, and probably felt like a 1.5-2.0 here. e could feel it, but didn't feel like any danger.

I was just re-reading the story of why they didn't build that Bodega Bay nuclear plant last night at bedtime... glad everyone is safe. Sounds like it was a minor event. 😬

Just a mild roll at my house, seemed like it lasted about 3 seconds.

We got what felt like one substantial jolt here in the Oakland Hills. My wife and I were both in my office near my Series II bass and I immediately took it off the stand and put it in it's flight case for safe keeping. Like Bill this was the most substantial  quake I have felt in a long time. Weird that it occurred in such close proximity to the 30th anniversary of the Loma Prieta quake. That one was my first earthquake experience...

The last quake I was in was the Loma Prieta in 1989. We were living in the Central Valley at that time. It was like being on top of a block of Jello as the waves bounced back and forth between the Sierra's and Coast Range. The strongest close big quake for me was the Morgan Hill quake in 1984. Our house was a couple miles down the mountain from the epicenter. Even though we get earthquakes occasionally here in the East the only one I've felt was a 2.9 some years back.

Before or after the quake?

Before the quake although during the quake we were wondering if we were going to end up under it.

We have lots of homes around here hugging the East Bay Hills where half or more of the home is sticking out over the ledge and resting on  long poles, like stilts.  I'd probably soil myself if I was in one of them during a decent sized quake!
