I just had a situation last Monday... A long-time guitarist friend of mine (25 years) wanted to "rent" one of my Rickenbackers to give to a bass player as they form a Yes Tribute band??  WTF?  Not just a gig....but as a long time proposition.  I was taken aback and a little insulted.  He is still working....making good money....but wanted Me to supply has bass player with gear.  There is an old saying "It doesn't hurt to ask."  But I say it does hurt.....I now look at this "friend" as just another acquaintance.  It is sad.
Where are we going...and why am I in this Handbasket?

I loaned my son - that's my son - my Alvarez to take to a campfire.

When he brought it home I was dumping gravel out the sound hole.  Really.  Loan an Alembic to someone I'm not related to?  Probably not, I'm thinking.........

Peter (who likewise never let that little turd take one his guitars out of the house again)

My 1985 Alvarez 5220 (I'm the original owner) has camped many nights with me. I'm convinced camp atmospheres are strong contributor to it's endearing tone.  8) I've carried it on my pack without the case, played by fires, and let it rest in tents. I recently loaned it to my daughter who brought it back without the strap and strap pin. I kinda don't wanna know...  :o

So, in response to the OP, I will not loan my Epic to anyone for any length of time. The same goes for my WY1 Yairi.

I would only lend it on these circumstances:
1. Only to a really good friend and bass player
2. If I can bring the bass to his concert
3. I can stay on concert and watch it
4. If I can take the bass home after gig

Usually those 4 things never happen so, I just say, sorry but no!
The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.

I am likewise the original owner of my '79 5014, and I concur on the beneficial effects of campfire playing - but not of whatever it took to get gravel inside it..........

Well. I would never lend my Alembic to anyone, except my best friend Jim, whom I’ve known since high school and who was my bass player on the road for several years, and builds guitars and basses himself. No one else would understand, or be trustworthy.

True on that!
