Rough couple of weeks for me here.  7/18 my 11 year old Weimaraner Zoey had a large mass removed from from her upper abdomen.  That turned out to be a benign Lipoma.  Going into the surgery she seemed healthy, energetic and still quite playful and somewhat puppy like for an 11 year old. The week following recover was rough as she didn't have any interest in food. By day nine she was in the emergency clinic. 


X-Rays and ultrasounds revealed a 6.5 cm mass near her adrenal gland, and another mass in her chest area.  Guessing the surgery/recovery process provided enough ammunition for these things to start taking more of a toll on her.


She's basically home now in doggy hospice care, trying to get another couple of days with her as long as she isn't in too much pain, but Im guessing she's probably got maybe a day tops left in her. 




Hug your dogs close guys and spend as much time as you can with them.  They are here for such a short period of time it just isn't fair.

I lost my sweet Ursa, a gorgeous and youthful Rottweiler until the end about 18 months ago. We haven’t got a new dog yet but that day is getting closer.

Sorry Greg.  The only downside to having a dog is that they don't live long enough.  I'm sure Zoey lived a great life with you and the last thing you can do for her is to let her go.

I get it... and recognize that making the very difficult decision to prevent unnecessary suffering is unselfish and reflects how you honored Zoey’s years of love by letting her go.

Read that Dickens quote again and sit with it...  the loss of a ‘fur baby’ is devastating, with time the tears and emptiness will lessen and be replaced with joy as the memories of real love returns.  Allow yourself to grieve at your own pace.

Thanks Paul... I've had that quote on my mind the past week.  She was essentially on doggie hospice care all week.  Not eating and surviving off of Subcutaneous IV fluids and being force fed with a syringe (only other thins she would eat willingly were peanut butter and ice cream).  She was a fighter, and showed an interest in life and willingness to live up until today when it was clear her body just was giving out.

I feel empty now, it's hard to believe a dog can make that much of an impact on ones life and Im not even sure if I'll be able to stay in this large house and large property without her...She had quite literally become my best friend and companion on many adventures over the years.  The last year I wasn't around as much as I would like to have been for her, but still the majority of my free time was devoted to her.

I probably have hundreds if not thousands of photos of her, but these two are my favorites.

Zoey will always be in your heart.  And when the time is right you will have another canine companion, not as a replacement but to augment the love you learned from Zoey.   

Paul (whose wife has ‘augmented’ our original pack of 3 canines up to 4!  Plus 3 felines.  But hey- animals are better than humans.)
