New/First time Alembic owner - absolutely in love!
« on: July 09, 2019, 05:56:01 PM »
Just received my first Alembic. I fell in love with it on Reverb and was able to cut a deal with the second (previous) owner. It just came today, and I could not be happier.

Below is a picture, but I'll list the specs I have so far. I have a serial number request in on that part of the forum, but no word yet.

Alembic Distillate, custom order (evidently). 34" scale, serial number dates it, I think, to 1989, the penultimate production year. Standard Distillate controls, but the pickup rotary control is near all the other knobs, as opposed to on the lower horn.

I was not ready for just how good this bass would sound. Crisp, bright highs and clear, bellowing lows. It puts every other bass I've played to shame. Even my beloved Rick 4003 when I run it through Rick-O-Sound. Its significantly heavier than the notorious Peavey T-40 I had, not that I mind.

I plan on using it in the band I'm in Alcove, out of NJ - https://alcovebandnj.bandcamp.com/

Please forgive the low quality of that EP. We're currently recording our first LP, due out later this year. We usually play in NJ/NYC/PA.

A few questions for the all-knowing:

1. I believe the tuners are aftermarket - they say Made in Japan on the back.
2. The pickups have been raised all the way up. Bass still sounds fantastic, but is there a guide to lowering them safely? They do have a nice overdriven quality to them at this height, even if when plucking hard the string hits the pickup.
3. I was thinking of stringing it with a high C, and it seems like it would fit in the nut perfectly. Has anyone else tried this?
4. Is contact cleaner ok for scratchy pots/scratchy input jack? If not, what should I use?

Thank you!

Welcome to the club, Major. Very nice stealth Distillate. You should play it with pride.

Congratulations and welcome. That is one seriously sweet Alembic.
Diltillate with a point! So cool. I remember seeing that bass on Reverb but didn’t realize it had a point.

Dave answered 2 and 4, I'll help with 1 and 3:

1. Naw - it's likely just Gotoh tuners which would be standard for the time. Later we had them custom made with our "A" logo on the back, but we didn't know you could even do that back then.

3. You can try it sure! The grooves will be too big, and it might work fine. It won't be ideal, but you can test. If you really love it that way you can change the hardware (sorry it's not cheap!) and get it done like it was like that from the start. But I know people who have changed the tuning as you describe and are happy with the results. You can always put it back if you don't like it.

Congratulations & Compliments Adam, and Welcome.

That's a fine bass you have there, definitely some nice custom touches. The very first Alembic bass I ever played was a Distillate 5-string, soooo long ago.

We love pictures around here, so if you'd like to share any more of your new treasure, here's the Distillate Showcase Thread-

Again, welcome.  :)

Cool bass! Distillate with a Spoiler/Point body, wow. I think Alembic really knocked it out of the park with the Distillate as their first "budget" model. A real bargain when you look at all the higher-end features - purpleheart stringers, crown headstock, brass bridge block... Enjoy, and let us know when that LP is done!
Re: high C - I've gone back and forth (low B/high C) on my old Guild Pilot 5er. Not a problem for me, but will depend on how your nut was cut.

And I have converted a 5 string Spoiler from low strung to high strung with no necessary adjustment, too. All depends on the slots and setup.

I have recently acquired another brand of 5 string which I changed to high strung as well. Unfortunately, that one had a buzz. Luckily a few folds of aluminum foil in the A string slot works fine for the time being while I decide whether or not it's a 'keeper'.

Thank you everybody for the well wishes. I'm already pining for a second one  ::)

The pictures that were on Reverb didn't do it justice. I had to ask for more just to make sure it did have its "tail."

The grooves in the nut are pretty shallow, so I think it will handle a high C just fine. On the other hand, a low B has never sounded better to my ears than now. Still in shock of how good a bass this is.
