One thing I would like to know is if there is a difference between the old red knob, blue chassis F2B and the modern all black F2B. Anyone has both?

At one of he CA gatherings I mentioned to Mica that I had been tempted to buy a used newer F2-B I saw selling for a cheap price. She told me it was virtually the same as the early 70s blue one I already own.

Kind of a shame there isn’t enough space for them to have added a DI to the later ones but still a classic preamp.

Cool! Thats very good to know because I really want to get the modern F2B to fit my Alembic rack color scheme  ;D

Based on recommendations at TalkBass & a Labor Day sale via Reverb, I picked up the BETA Mk II Germanium pedal from SolidGoldFX to try and recreate the sound I got with my overdriven F-2B. It was just delivered Monday, I like it so far - it gives a definite bass-boost that isn't controllable - for that you need the BETA DLX which offers a bunch of different options, but is also much bigger. I re-recorded my demo piece with the BETA, it sounds different than my F-2B one (the drums & the bass) but it should give an idea of what the BETA does.

I used a different bass on this one - my Fender Donald Duck Dunn P-Bass (passive) with heavy LaBella flatwounds (that I won in a contest!) but it's a similar sound to what I was going for with my AlFemBic - to make comparison easier here's the original demo:

An F-2B with an IN-2 is a perfect combination! But it is two spaces.
