Hello fellow Alembic owners. I sold a bass years ago that was on my "swear I'll never sell" list. I was in a bad situation and had to sell it. I asked the new owner if he would ever sell it back to me in the future. He promised me he would. He owned about four basses and mine was one of them, and his "never sell" was a 1983 Spoiler.

Well, here we are in June of 2019 and it's been about SIX years since I sold Nick my bass. I kept his contact info, meaning a cell number. That's it. Well, Nick's number was in one of my dead cell phones and because a friend of mine needed a phone, I dug out ol' Betsy and charged her and retrieved Nick's cell number. He had stopped playing bass for now and sold all of his basses EXCEPT for the bass I sold him because he promised he would sell it back to me and he was awaiting my phone call (text). Does this guy rule or what ??

Nick said he tried calling me years ago but I never responded. He kept the bass. Now, SIX years later I text him and he agreed to sell me the bass back. I figured he would still want  a bass around the house so I traded him a NICE bass and cash for my bass. I'm happy as a clam.

Nick said that he sold his beloved Alembic Spoiler in mint condition and regretted not saving the new owner's info and said he had wished he had done what I did with him.

So, I feel it is my duty to help him find his old SPOILER. It is a 1983 serial number 12 26 1983 stamped on the gold plate.

If you are the owner or know where it is please let me know so I can let Nick know. He is my hero. :)

Mike

The serial number appears to be incorrect.  The first two numbers should be the year, 83; followed by the letter S, and then 4 more numbers, the first is which would probably be a 2.

Yep, that number sounds like a date or something somebody stamped on the truss rod cover. They didn't stamp serial numbers in the brass plates until 1989 or so, so the serial number for Nick's Spoiler should be in the end of the fingerboard, and possibly in the electronics cavity too. Like Dave says, prefixed with the year 83 then letter code S, followed by four digits, for a 1983, in the 2400-3000 range. Quite a few Spoilers from back then had solid koa body wings.

Find out what it is for sure, post it here, and I'll watch for it. I gotta' weird thing about serial numbers and reunions.  :)

Hi guys ! Thanks SO MUCH for your help and interest. I just text Nick and he said the number I provided is CORRECT and like you said, it is on a gold plate, he said, so I'm assuming he means the truss rod cover. It does indeed read 12 26 1983 which also happens to be his birthday !

Sorry Michael... can't help much with that number. I'll keep an eye out for a Spoiler with an engraved plate with that inscription on it. Who knows... maybe we'll get lucky and spot it one day.  :)

Have Nick check the fingerboard itself, right below the 24th fret, for a serial number.  It should be stamped right into the Ebony.

Wondering if Nick wrote down what he thought was the serial number at the time he owned the bass or if he is going by pictures he took. If he has pictures ask if he has one that shows the brass truss rod cover and the very end of the ebony fingerboard just above the truss rod cover. If he has a photo please post it. Alembic will customize pretty much any aspect of a build but I don't think they would have created a special serial number format for one instrument.

Mike, that is very thoughtful of you to help Nick finds his old bass.
It may be difficult, I know I owned my bass for quite sometime before I found this website.

Hi David,
Thanks. I asked Nick about the serial number and he was not familiar with Alembics as some of are in the sense that we know it has it in the cavity, as well. All he knows is the date stamped onto the plate at the base of the neck. Thank you again.

Michael,
Has the fingerboard been altered?  Try looking beyond the 24th fret on the fingerboard at various angles, as others have mentioned, that is where the serial number should be.

Generally any annotations in the cavity are related to manufacturing data and not really related to a serial number.

Good luck,
Paul

EDIT> Early morning brain fart(s).  If I understand correctly neither you nor your friend are in possession of the 12 26 1983 bass.  So trying to find the correct serial number is a silly direction to go...  sounds like perhaps it was a Boxing Day, Kwanzaa, Second Day of Christmas, St. Stephens Day, etc. type of gift and was memorialized with the engraving on the brass plate.

Seriously... a lot of events on that day:

Michael, does Nick remember any other details about this Spoiler? What wood or finish was it, to help narrow the search a bit.

Just for the sake of looking for proverbial 'needles in haystacks' I went poring through the Serial Number Lookup threads here the other day. I was looking specifically for an '83 Spoiler with a 12/26/1983 'birthday', just in case that date had some significance to the bass itself... didn't find a match, but there are a bunch of '83s in there. Who knows, one of them may be Nick's.

Here is a recent '83 Spoiler that started out in Ohio and turned up in Taipei- http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=24395.0

Here's the whole list-
http://club.alembic.com/index.php?board=169.0

Whew! There are a BUNCH of 1983 Spoilers out there, and a good many first-year '82s. That model was a homerun if ever one was hit. Big jump in production reflected those years too.

I'm guessing S's are being mistaken for 6's. Making that one 83S2962 (?)

(You know, and I'm just riffing here...the number you have in the original post almost sorta maybe contains S2983 if the S is seen as a 6 and the 2 was somehow seen as a 1.) ???
