Oteil Burbridge on Phil Lesh's Alembic!
« on: June 01, 2019, 01:49:56 PM »
You might have seen this on Instagram, but I know a lot of you can't see posts there - Alembic took Khaleesi to Shoreline Amphitheatre for Dead & Company's rehearsals the day before the first show of the tour - Oteil shared this pic:

Will McCosker shared this pic showing more of his rig:

Here's Mica's comment when they reposted Oteil's pic (with Oteil's original text):

One thing you may notice is that Oteil is now on stage left on Mickey Hart's side. Unfortunately he didn't play Alembic at the show last night - back to his old green Modulus, with what looked like a Fodera on a stand as a backup. Sound was ok - first set never really took off, John Mayer couldn't seem to keep any momentum going, but second set, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti got him going and the sound sounded like it gelled more. I was disappointed with the bass sound for the most part - you could hear him but it lacked something in the bottom end - though his solo on Eyes of the World was fantastic. Going again tonight!

That’s a beautiful bass. Would love to hear him play it.

I really enjoy his playing, especially with Dead & Co. Excited to hear there may be an Alembic bass in the future for Oteil too.  :)

Interesting, Jazzy... perhaps not visible outside of the U.S. ? Usually I can't see social media content that I'm not a subscriber of, but I can actually see the pics hieronymous posted.

It links to Flickr, and they show for me, and I'm pretty sure I haven't logged on there.

I've been disappointed with Oteil's sound with Dead & CO, too. It lacks the deep fundamental and presence that Phil always got, but even worse, it doesn't represent how truly awesome Oteil's sound on its own is. Having heard him play live since 1991, I have a certain expectation and for some reason, in Dead and CO, he's pretty indistinct. One of my pet theories is that in this context, a neck through instrument (such as an Alembic) would provide better low end than a bolt on, but his Modulus should sound better than it does.

Clearly, he needs to check out the Swap Shop here more often! http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=24752.0  ;D

Seriously, I've heard/read this opinion elsewhere too, regarding Dead & Co.s sound being hit or miss, from people I know who've been to multiple shows, and I gotta' put yours in front of most, Edwin... I have a recording though (from Alpine Valley, Night 1 last June 22nd) that I think the bass sounds pretty darn good. Could be better, sure...

One thing is for sure... if he gets to messin' around with a Series bass, and experiences that Magic, it won't be long before he orders one.

Night 2 was incredible! The bass sounded better - not the lows that Edwin is talking about but much more part of the mix - in fact the mix just sounded so much better to me. One of those things - the crowd was more into it, the band was more into it. Night 1 John Mayer just didn't seem to be able to carry a solo to fruition - like he was being to polite or hesitant. There were moments like that on Night 2 as well, but there were many more times when things DID come to fruition - those moments though tended to happen when everyone started to push - it was almost Phish-like (well, old-school Phish-like, Trey seems to give up a lot more these days), where they would play and play and push and push until they hit a climax, then keep playing and keep pushing, climaxing again and again.

Not a great picture, but I just wanted to capture this moment, when Oteil went over to Bob Weir during The Other One:

Looking forward to hearing an Alembic with this group!

Edward, It seems like I can't see it on my iPhone or iPad but can now see it on the Mac.  Looks really cool on Oteil.

One of my pet theories is that in this context, a neck through instrument (such as an Alembic) would provide better low end than a bolt on, but his Modulus should sound better than it does.

I actually asked him about this when he did an AMA last year on Reddit. It got the most upvotes, so obviously there are plenty of people that share our opinion. Idk what the problem actually is, but the Dead and Co experience suffers big time from it basically being a bass-less...

"Oteil,

You have been consistently low in the mix, since the beginning. I assume partly due to your desired tone, but partly due to probably the others behind the board. When you play with a pick it certainly helps, but that's a small percentage of the time. What can we do to turn you up in the mix? As a bassist, it is really disappointing to consistently struggle to hear you at concerts and in recordings. I mean this not as a criticism, but I really want to hear you more, as do many others. Can we get something done about this?

Thank You! See you at Alpine."

"[Oteil] Since this has been “upvoted” to be the number one question, let’s address this. First of all, I have absolutely no control of my volume in the PA that the audience hears. As some of you may know (or may be able to see if you are close up), I use inner-ear monitors so I can hear myself just fine and am not able to tell what you guys are hearing because I have my own mix. I talked with the sound man about it last fall because we saw lots of fan comments about it back then and he’s constantly adjusting to a situation that is always in flux. Maybe you guys should try trading the “Let Oteil Sing” shirts for “Turn Oteil Up” shirts! Haha"
