The RF upgrades are for the Series electronics.
You won't have that concern with a Spoiler.

I though that too, then one guy who is selling an earlier Spoiler said his bass had the RF upgrade.
Read this too. So I don't know what the deal is. Thank you though J9

Interesting. Perhaps I am incorrect. I learn something new here almost every day.

Either way the 94' is a beauty and he lives close enough where I can drive to check it out. Very reasonable price too. So evem if it needs some upgrades its all good.

Pretty sure that when I took my Quantum bass with 1988 Alembic electronics in for some upgrading last year Mica told me that they had a few things they could do to lower the noise floor in the older activator circuits. Definitely worth checking out the Spoiler if it is close to you.

The upgrades for non-Series instruments are trivial by comparison. We only need the electronics, and most are under $125.

Offhand, I'd guess the weight and balance of a Spoiler 5 may be an issue for you before any noise, Craig... seems like I recall you've had at least one of these before, but from personal experience, my Persuader 5-string is the heaviest of my Alembics, and the most neck-heavy at that. Not insurmountable for me, at least not yet.  ;)  Hopefully you can try it out first.

On the subject of RF upgrades, every single one of my Alembics are dead quiet, except my '81 Distillate... it is the only one that ever experiences any high frequency interference. I so seldom ever open the filter that far that it isn't much of an issue for me playing out anywhere, but it's definitely there. I've been thinking lately about a trip out to California to visit the Mothership and just bringing that one along for it's first journey home in nearly 40 years.

It all makes sense now. Thank you Mica.

Thank you. All good points. I am going to try it first. I was considering it just to have as a 5-string for certain songs and the occasional show. I am pretty much a 4-string player these days. Luckily the seller's location is on my way to a gig on Sunday. These are on the heavy side, like 11plus lbs. Might be too much. He said he has a new Moody strap that makes its much more tolerable. I will check it out. and let y'all know. Love Alembics. Definitely want to have one built for me someday.
