How many of us have been to the gig of another forum member?
« on: November 15, 2018, 07:05:44 AM »

Last weekend George Price came across London to my gig with Musical Youth and we had a good chat backstage about all things alembic. Although unplugged I handed him my Maple Europa 5 just like flip did to me with his elan bass when we met up briefly in Amsterdam. He also took a couple of video clips on his phone.
It got me thinking how many of us have been to the gigs of other forum members?
I will start the ball rolling:

Jimmy Johnson: When he was gigging locally with Allan Holdsworth.
Jacko: I went to his Grateful Dead Tribute band gig when they came to my town. (I brought my Series II Europa for him to tryout).
George Price: I went to his gig with the Second Sons when they were gigging about 30 miles from where I live.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

I've seen Art play several times in both rock and jazz settings, and I've seen Adam with Zoso several times.

I've seen JimmyJ, moderator Dave and Adam play.

I've also run into a couple of other local Alembic players at gigs and chatted with them but don't know if they are members here.

I've seen Jimmy J with James Taylor a few times, but never actually met him.  (Yet..?)
I used to think I was indecisive, but now I'm not so sure.

I've seen Wolf (Sonicus), Harry (Hieronymous), StevenR, & Edwin play gigs.  A little incestuous, maybe?

Bill, tgo

Saw Jimmy Johnson with the Steve Gadd band, and had a nice chat during the meet-and-greet after the show. He is as likeable IRL as online.

I’ve seen Stanley a few times, and Mark King some time ago. And I know Tom Fowler who played an Alembic with Zappa, but not sure I ever heard that in person.

Oh, forum members... sorry. I need to pay more attention to the topic!

Years ago, (23 years) I met a very kind bass player in Nashville, Tennessee who handed me his Distillate 5-string. I thought it was the most beautiful bass I'd ever seen or heard. Wish I could remember that guy's name.

Met Jimmy J before a concert in North Carolina a couple Summers ago... chatted Alembics, road stories and bass-playin' in general for a while before he had to go to work. Adriaan is 100% right... Jimmy J is the kind of dude that makes you proud to play these things. Monster player, but keeps the Badge in his pocket.

Wasn't at a gig, but had a mini-meet-up with Keith in Raleigh one time, and got to check out his custom fretless Orion Nebula, and Brown Bass... two of my favorites, ever.

The search continues up here in southwestern Virginia. I've yet to meet another Alembic in the wild. I'm hoping to maybe get a populace of Dragons started around here.

Please excuse my incorrect topic post.  :P  But thank you guys for the kind words.  I always enjoy talking shop with this family of Alembic players.

Saw Edwin once when out in Colorado for work.

My Canadian friend was with when we saw Shakedown Street.  He wasn’t familiar with the Dead nor the value of a groovy bass line until that night.

He wears tie-dye now and convinced his country to “legalize it”.   :D

 8) You didn't meet them, they met YOU !  :) :)
My FAVORITES of all time -
- Jimmy J
- Mark King
- Geddy Lee
- Stanley

Seen all of them live, too, THANK GOD !!!

Sorry Jimmy J, I know you're real sensitive about compliments and tend to stay away from that sort of thing, right ? Well, when I asked if you gave lessons you said, "No, trust your heart" . You made my day. Seriously though, your playing and tone brings me to tears. Yes, because it's beyond words, not because it sucks.
I have a 1992 Europa 4 by the way.

I've seen Jimmyj quite a few times now, with James Taylor and allan Holdsworth over here and also in LA at the baked potato. He's often had the time for a chat.
Also from the forum, I've seen and chatted with Jan-Olof Strandberg and Trip Walmsley at an early Manchester Bass Day and also seen MickeyP play a few times.  JoS posts from time to time but the other two haven't been on here for years (not sure if trip ever was).
There was another guy on here who I saw in Edinburgh but can't remember his name - moved to Ireland and started playing Status. He has posted videos of himself in the last 12 months.
edit - Karl Clews was the man. superb player. Very Funky
