does alembic still custom make electronics?
« on: November 11, 2018, 01:52:51 PM »
looking to add alembic pickups to my modulus q5 bc it just can't compete with my epic in terms of boom and tone.

would they make me an epic electronics in emg 40 dc sized casing so I could drop it into my mod?  I emailed a while ago but never heard back

Drew,
Are you ready for the price tag if they are able to do it?
It won't be cheap.
You'd probably be able to buy a used Epic for less. Seriously.

this would be a long term idea, just combining the two would be a dream bass.

I wonder if it might be more cost effective in the long run to just make a new body with routs for Alembic pickups and then you customize everything for those electronics. Then, you can swap the bodies back and forth, if you like.

I like Modulus necks, but I'm not that enamored of the bodies, especially the finishes. I have a Q6 where the top to back glue joint seems a little sloppy with filler in places that other companies just wouldn't even bother with. It's pretty, but I think the tone is a bit choked off as a result.

I'd think it would be far cheaper to buy the pickups and network off-the-shelf from Alembic, and take them and the bass to a qualified guitar tech and have the body re-routed and installed that to get Alembic to custom make a set of pickups to fit the existing routs.  Waaaaaayyyyyyyyy cheaper . . . . . .

Drew, at risk of asking a possibly silly question, have you measured those EMG's to see if a set of MXY56's wouldn't fit in the rout?

Having asked the question before, I can tell you the answer is yes, they can do custom pickups... but the cost and the catch is this; if the pickups aren't a common mold they already have on hand, it takes time to produce a custom set. Time = Well... you know.

I think Joey's idea is best, and it might even be the same advice he dispensed to me when I was pondering 'Alembicizing' a Gibson Thunder Series V bass that came with TB+ pickups. Most people that play Thunderbird basses play them because they like that particular thing, so there isn't much need for an Alembic drop-in replacement for Thunderbird pickups. The easiest thing to do was rout it out for a set of stock AXY's. (I still might do that one day)

A EMG 40DC is 4'' x 1.5''. An Alembic MXY56 is 5'' x 1.22''. Personally, I would route the stock body for a pair of AXY56 which is 5'' x 1.75''. Those necks are might nice!

would the axy pickups work, they are very similar in size to the emg 40 dc
