Is this something to be concerned about (Classico)
« on: November 10, 2018, 08:23:50 PM »
Last night whilst tuning up at the start of practice I noticed the tuning peg gears looked odd. I can't think what is going on but is it something I should be concerned about. It is on all four pegs with different degrees of markings. I presume it is cosmetic but maybe you can think what is going on here. The only thing I can think of is that something under the part with the schaller script on is catching as the peg is turned and scratching the chrome plating but I can't feel anything stiff or untowards whilst turning the pegs. If you have a classico can you see if yours is the same. Any ideas. Mica?

I have what appear to be the original milling marks across the flat face of the gears (parallel straight line marks). I can't tell from the photo whether your marks are the same as mine or not; from the photo your marks appear to be cross-hatched, but it could just be the light reflection). The gears on mine don't seem to be rubbing.

You might check the spacing by applying a thin piece of transparent or other tape across the face of the gear while turning it to see if the tape is displaced or scratched, if you haven't already. It is a puzzlement...

I spotted this in another for sale ad (for a 70s Gibson bass). Looks similar ... and therefore not conccerning

Wish I could help you......but Mica has had my Classico these past 18 months!  ;)   I'll check when it returns.....the idea of transparent tape and a full revolution of the gear sounds like a good non-destructive test!
