Semi-rigid case for Series 1 short scale
« on: November 09, 2018, 03:18:41 PM »
Hi all, I cannot carry my 1979 Series 1 shorty on the London underground with the standard unwieldy hard shell case. I know many like Jazzyvee are fans of the Harvest padded leather gigbags but I wondered if anyone has found a semi-rigid gigbag (like a Mono or Protec) that fits the bass and provides a decent amount of protection?

PS before anyone asks my bass is still with the engineers after 6 weeks due to difficulty and letdowns sourcing a no longer manufactured  (in Europe) component for the faulty bridge pickup electronics. Sigh ...

I like the Reunion Blues Continental. I wonder if you might even get away with the guitar version. It's really protective, reasonable weight, and the bass version can be checked onto an airplane, at least in the US.

Thank you, I will measure the exact dimensions of my bass once it's back from the engineers and see if it fits the dimensions of the Continental guitar case (pretty sure the bass case would be too big). Cheers!

Incidentally I liked the Harvest bag when I had a Brown bass a few years back. My concerns would be whether it's sufficiently waterproof (it was pouring with rain on the way to and from my gig this evening) and whether it looks so posh it would encourage thieves!

I use the Mono. It’s very protective. A bit long for my shorty but acceptable.

Thank you. Regular Mono or the slimmer Sleeve? Wondering if the Mono guitar case would fit - anyone tried?

I spray my harvest gig bag with the water repellant stuff that you can put on suede and leather shoes. Ive been out in the rain with mine and had no problems. Though in a heavy downpour the zip area would possibly let in some moisture. If you prefer a hard case you can check out backaxe its a strap system that fits round a regular hard case and lets you carry it on your back like a gig bag. I got one about a month ago to fit round my scott dixon aluminium flight case. Works great.

Thanks FC and Jazzyvee. I may end up going down the Harvest route (again) but I just wanted to see what alternatives are available given the reduced length of the SS Series 1. Cheers!

GruvGear for my Series 1 1980 long scale... perfect

Even has that weird compartment on top of head-stock for carrying power supply....
The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.

Harvest do a short scale case as I have one myself which doubles nicely for guitar. The owner of the company also has a short scale alembic.
