If one lives in the area and has 2-3 big, strong friends to accompany him or her, it would certainly be worth a look. Or arranging a meeting in a public place to look it over. Had a friend who recently went to purchase a used laptop on Craigslist. Walked in to the apt and was hit over the head with a bb bat. Only reason he survived is that his brother, a former Olympic cross country skier was a few feet behind him.

Most of our local police departments have added exchange areas for for Craigslist/private sales. I like it as it tend to filter out the scammers who don't like the idea of being anywhere near the police when the rip someone off.
