Boosting boombox bass with an enclosure?
« on: September 20, 2018, 04:42:44 PM »
At work (3rd shift, machine shop, i’m the only guy there)
I have small radio... bad reception... syndicate radio stations only... I am loosing my mind!

I intend to buy a small boombox (mp3 compatable cd player) and have realistic expectations for the bass response.

Does any one have dimensional ideas for creating a small wood box for increasing bass response?  Thinking how much free air space, baffled, etc. etc.

Thanks!

I was snooping in, to see if anyone had any cool DIY ideas...

The good news (if nothing turns up) is, there's some pretty decent sounding portable stuff out there anymore. I've been amazed at the bass response some of them have.

There are some pretty impressive boom boxes on the market these days. Head down to Best Buy or the equivalent and listen to a bunch of them. Maybe something like the AudioEngine A2 speakers with a smart phone as the audio source for streaming or file playback might be a good way to go. Compact and pretty good sounding.

Or, if there's room, just look on CL for a used stereo from the 70s or 80s. There's some great stuff out there for cheap.

Thanks Edwin, I have been watching Craigslist.  I don't own a smart phone (!).  Coupled with, this is a large corporation and sadly not all of the employees there are thoughtful.  So I don’t want to spend a lot on a sounds system that will be exposed to my co-workers lackadaisical attitudes.

Craigslist is my best hope but so many have “only radio works”.  Best Buy and Target both were belligerent about letting me plug it in and try it first (no display models were available) and everything is in a box. The first store the guy told me that I can “always bring it back for a return if i’m not happy with it”.  The second store, when I asked to listen to it the guy said “no, we don’t have a demo out on that one”.  I told him that he has nothing that I need and walked quietly out with my head hanging low...  my reality is not suiting my being these days...

Gonna stick with Craigslist and hope for the best, ideally one that plays mp3 formatted cd’s.  Put one in and good for 6 hours.   I always wanted ones of these... and I still have a lot of cassettes.

My wife was at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore and found a $20 Panasonic SA-PM17.
5 disc cd changer, cassette and plenty of bass!
