Replacement tuners for spoiler
« on: September 17, 2018, 12:53:00 PM »
I have a 1984 Spoiler that has chrome Schaller tuners. One of the tuners has lost its grease cap. they look just like the Smaller M4 180's so I thought that would be a direct replacement but when I got it I find that they are slightly larger than what is on the bass and won't fit. Any one know how I can get a replacement (or from where)?. Thanks in advance.

The tuners in 1984 were Schaller M4.

The A and D string tuners were modified to share a single anchor screw. Is that the part that isn't fitting? If not, can you send a picture or describe more fully what isn't fitting? I wasn't aware that anything other than the position of the anchor screw changed with the M4 model over time.

Here is a picture of 3 M4 tuners the one in the background is off of the bass and is the one with the missing grease cap. The one on the right of from the bass and the one on the left is a current M4. As you can see, the tuner bodies are different sizes. Yes it still fits through the holes in the headstock and yes the anchor screw holes still align. I will get a complete set of new M4's if I need to but I would much prefer being able to match the original tuners with a replacement. Any way to do that?

If Schaller has changed the body, then your only hope is to locate a vintage tuner off eBay or similar. I do not have any oldies around here, sorry.

Although the body and the key's shaft look a bit different now (in addition to the original anchor screw position) I don't think they've changed the diameter of the main shaft - which shows a spec of 14mm.  I believe my older Schallers are the same.  The "nut" which threads onto the main shaft is the bit that needs to fit into the hole - as I'm sure you've figured out already.  See if your original nut will fit on the new tuner.
