Stay Safe from Florence
« on: September 13, 2018, 07:05:16 PM »
Dave and other Alembicans from North and South Carolina who may be in the way of Florence, get to high ground and make sure you stay safe.  Hoping this storm, in spite of all that has been said, is more bark than bite.

The winds are finally starting to pickup to a decent intensity at my place south of Raleigh. With the change of track possible wind speeds for us will only be 30-40 mph for tomorrow dropping to 25 mph or less on Saturday. Rain has dropped off to under 7 inches. I more worried about my daughter and her husband who live just south of Fort Bragg and are forecast to see 60+ mph gusts and upwards of 15" of rain. Still mild in  comparison to the coast but we also tend to have more trees to topple inland. I know member Alan Dover lives down in Fayetteville not far from Bragg as well. Not sure if anyone else does.

Currently the forecast here isn't showing too much wind, gusting up to 20 mph Saturday night through Sunday night.  The rain is a bit more concerning, but the latest forecast is suggesting just a few inches over that same period.  Just need to keep the ditches cleared.  I did work on the driveway some today, leveling out the gravel; but I need to dig out one of the ditches tomorrow or the upper driveway could suffer some damage.

Rain is really the issue up here in our part of Virginia. It's already kinda' wet... if we really get the 7" - 12" forecasted, it'll be a mess. The utility I work for already made staffing provisions for around-the-clock operation should it become necessary. Meanwhile we hope and pray for a break. That's about all we can do.

It has started raining here.  It looks like we'll get between 4.5 and 6 inches of rain between now and late tomorrow night.  A lot, but nothing compared to the eastern Carolinas.  I've smoothed out the gravel for the length of the driveway, and I think I've got the ditch on the upper section about where it needs to be.  I'll go out and check the ditches and driveway from time to time today and tomorrow.

Didn't realize you were in Asheville, David. One of my favorite places I've been to. We're supposed to get the remnants of the storm starting Monday into Tuesday here at the shore.  The surf is probably huge right now, but I haven't been over to the beach to see.

We lucked out quite a bit here. I don't know what the numbers will be once it has all passed as the weather reports are saying we will be wet through Tuesday. We had some good sized gusts and other than their duration they were similar to summer thunderstorms in intensity. The same goes for the rain. Most of it has just been a continuous light to medium rain with the occasional downpour as the storm bands came through. What really surprised me is we haven't lost power (knock on wood).  The only tree I saw that was down was in the neighborhood behind us and it was pretty rotted in its middle. I went ahead and moved the vehicles back to our drive from a neighbor who has no trees this afternoon as the worst seems to be over for us.

My daughter has seen more rain and wind down her way near Fayetteville. They had a little bit of leakage when the winds picked up the cap on their fireplace chase. They also found shingles from someones house, not theirs, when they went out to their backyard during one of the lulls. While they still have power she says it is out from Raeford all the way into Fayetteville on US 401. She also has seen some signs of flooding with the creeks and rivers which are expected to crest on Monday.

I've only seen the pictures of New Bern which has been hit pretty hard. We have family friends down there but due to power outages haven't been able to reach them to see if they are ok. Based on the pictures areas that have never flooded in living memory are seeing water measured in feet. My thoughts go out to them and others in the low areas along the coast.

Dave - Hope the drive holds up for you. If it is any consolation I don't think you need to worry about flooding as it is all downhill from your house.  A lot of downhill at that. :D

I spoke with my brother a little while ago.  He lives in Hickory.  Nothing much so far - it's moving very slowly.  They're preparing for a lot of rain and the power going out for several days.

Everyone in its path batten down the hatches, get a good store of fresh water bottled, and get your battery-powered music playing devices ready.  And move your instruments to an upstairs room, if you have one.

Dave, we have a long gravel drive on the top of Irma Hill.  I have found, and as you probably already know, that a good rain suit, shovel/hoe in hand and getting out in it is the best way to see where the water is traveling and then redirect it.

Yes; have been there and have done that.  Will be interesting to see where things stand in the morning.

I asked my sister in Salisbury if it was safe to assume she would be safe, just very wet; she allowed as how that was what she was assuming as well.  I haven't heard otherwise yet, so I guess all's as well as can be so far.
My wife's niece is currently at her mom's up here in IL, but her hubby's at Ft. Bragg (I'm a lot more concerned about her than him, so we're good there....)
Y'all be careful, you hear?

A little while ago I walked down to the bottom of the drive and back.  Ditches and driveway holding up for now.  It poured all night and it's still pouring, and rain is forecasted the rest of the day and into tonight.

I got a message from my sister-in-law in Huntersville, which is not too far from Salisbury.  She said it's been relentless over the past 18 hours but not bad.
