Anyone exclusively using series basses for everything?
« on: August 17, 2018, 02:14:56 AM »
It's taken me a while but now I have a few series basses and non series alembics 4 and 5 strings, and more and more i'm finding myself preferring to use my series basses for everything these days even small dingy pub gigs. I have one other non alembic bass with east filters that I don't gig but carry with me if I'm away from home for work or at my gf's.
I only want to gig with my alembics so in that respect I don't have such a thing as a beater bass for those dodgy gigs as I always want the alembic sound.
Has anyone here gone exclusively for series basses for all their gigs etc and done it successfully without problems at those kind of gigs.
I know JJ does but then there is most likely proper back stage access control at his gigs and even the festival gigs I go to, the back stage security isn't as tight enough for me to feel confident to leave my basses back there unattended. From a musical perspective my heart wants to shift to all exclusively series but my logical mind tells me that's probably not practical or indeed sensible.

I love the sound of my non series basses but when I play them my ears are now seeking the series sound more and more which isn't there. If I was doing all really good safe venues the situation would be a no brainer.

That’s right on point for me jazzy. With a choice of three series basses I’m now spoilt...my 12 string Konig gets a run From time to time, otherwise series only. Bit sad to think of all the others sitting quietly in their cases at home. Should I sell the rest of my collection?

A couple of years ago I was at a friends who works on instruments and he showed be a 50's P bass that had big wood gouges in the body. He told me the owner was playing a gig and during the break some guy went up on stage and grabbed his bass and took off running for the door. They caught him in the gravel parking lot and when he slipped and fell, the vintage Fender bass got severely damaged.

I love my SS Series but am just not going to risk it. That's why I gig with a nice MusicMan Stingray 95% of the time!

Jazzy,
I think about this quite often. I have 2 Series 1's. 1- a 32" scale point and the other a 30" scale small body. My 3rd Alembic is O'le Reliable a 32" Distillate which I use most of the time.
I feel the Distillate gives me >85% of the tone I'm looking for. (Especially in venues I play at) And there is a pleasant ease in a single filter, common cabled, no power supply needed instrument that I have bonded with.
The point Series does sound better but she's about flawless in the scratch and ding dept. also is a bit big and heavy for those 3 hour no break gigs. The small body Series is a unique acoustically sounding bass that if I were in a Grateful Dead band would be ideal!
Bottom line for me at least, there is a lot to be said for simplicity when hauling, setting up, rushing around and sound checks having "O'l Reliable "
Life's is truly blessed in having such decisions to make!
Peace,
Pete

I have an older Series I which I use for gigs that are relatively safe.  Other than that I've got an SF-2 in my rack that does just about everything tonally that my Series bass does but along with my amp and FX-1 would be a lot more difficult to carry off. That's what goes to places I play that I'm not sure I want to see in the daylight.

I don't have a series bass now (unless you count my Starfire, which does go to every gig with me), but if I did, I would bring it every gig. It's an instrument, a tool, and it does what I want. I don't have instruments that are museum pieces. I also have all my stuff insured. That's what insurance is for.

I think if you are reasonably careful, you shouldn't have any trouble. Obviously, if there's a venue that's known for really sketchy behavior, then maybe not that one, but for most part, 99% of the people there won't even notice.

Jazzy:

For the last 20+ years, nearly all of my gigs have been in local bars.  Most of those bars are not what you might describe as "dodgy" but they are small with cramped stages and filled with drunks.  I use my Series basses at 90% of those gigs.   Sometimes, I will play a non-Alembic bass just for variety's sake.  Rarely, if I have reason to believe beforehand that the bar is either unusually small or has a reputation for crowds with bad behavior I will bring a second bass along in case I feel uncomfortable playing my Series.

I focus on stage side above because, in my experience, cymbals on cramped stages are a much greater threat to the security of my bass than anything else.  Guitar stands scare me as well! A long time ago, in a large and prominent showcase bar with a very large stage, I had an unattended Series bass fall off its stand just before a show and the headstock snapped off completely.  (see the gory details here: http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=3935.0 )   I still don't know how it happened as there was no one within 10 feet of the bass when it fell, but the point is that damage like that could have happened anywhere.
Of course, the possibility of theft is an ever-present danger, the occurrence of which can be made much less likely by attentiveness between sets, and especially after the gig. But, as is the case with the risk posed by the use of guitar stands, theft of a bass is a possibility at any gig, anywhere.

I completely agree with Edwin above: with reasonable caution, there is no reason not to use a Series bass in virtually any situation.  Indeed, there is every reason to use our Series basses everywhere: they are made to be played.

I do have Alembic series 1, but I have also 2x Fbass, Fodera, Molloon, old '66 jazz bass... for me I like the Alembic sound the most, but it's only a 4 string, so sometimes I need to get that low B so I have others... But I kind of like diversity in basses...
The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.

Since 1977, the only basses I've played out are my custom series basses (except for the time when the fretted was at the mothership for some work). I bought them because it's what makes playing feel and sound great for me. Anything else is a compromise. #heavilyInsured
