Best soft case for Series 1 standard Point bass
« on: July 27, 2018, 07:38:37 PM »
I have my first Alembic on the way and I would like to ask if any club members here have used any soft gig bags for their Standard Point bass? I figured it would be diffucult because of that point shape at the bottom should one day break through a soft case.

My advice and opinion is not to use a soft case / gig bag for this application . I would use a hard case that will provide appropriate and adequate protection .

Yes, that would be best, but alot of the gigs I play require me to bring a Sub 37 synth bass, pedaltrain, and sometimes a 5 string bass. I plan on having a custom heavy duty hard case made for my Alembic for overseas shows.

I have been looking for a second one for years.  The company that made the one I have (through Alembic) is no longer around.  My search has shown me that virtually NO ONE makes one long enough for a long scale Series point body.

My best recommendation is Mooradian.  I've talked with them, but never followed through with an order.  They've been make custom bags for professional upright players for years.  They are completely custom, and expensive, but what you carry your Alembic in is not something to buy on the cheap.

Good luck.

Body Glove used to make a hybrid hard sided gig bag.  Looks like a high end gig bag with thin internal hard plastic shells built into the front and back.  I have the bass version which I use for my 1977 Series I Long Scale 12 String Guitar, which is the large body with the point.  They stopped making them years ago, but they turn up on the used market every once in a while.  Most protective gig bag I've seen.   Another protective gig bag is the Reunion Blues bag.  They make a bass bag, but I don't know if it would fit an Alembic point.  You could probably just call them and ask - (they're in Petaluma, about 15 miles south of Alembic) - they seem to be nice people.

Thanks a lot for the info guys!

@FC Bass
I happen to have the exact same case as you, a mono 2 bass gig bag. I will give it a try when my bass arrives. Thanks!

What year is your bass?  The older 70s basses have shorter points.  I have a ‘76 long scale standard point and it fits (snuggly) in my Reunion Blues bag, but my 1980 long scale standard point has a longer point and does not fit in the Reunion Blues bag ( bass is too long).

If I am not mistaken Alembic can provide you with a fine form fitting  case as well . Both with ATA Flight case specs and also a standard large non ATA case that is formfitting . My 1981 Standard Point Medium Scale came with such a  non ATA flight case . I actally saw a used  such case on Ebay recently . :)

Might want to check out the Mono Vertigo case, similar to the M80 but designed so that you remove the bass with the case standing up, it doesn't open all the way like the M80. The Vertigo has a heavy rubber boot at the bottom of the case for protection, inside there is an indentation at the bottom so that the end pin doesn't contact anything and won't eventually break through. The indented area seems like it would be wide enough for the point on your bass. In the picture above it looks like there is a similar indentation in the bottom of the M80 that the point on Flip's bass is sitting in but no rubber boot for extra protection. The Vertigo has a built in neck brace similar to the one in the M80. Enjoy your new bass!

I would recommend getting a Cronkhite bag. They can come with a custom leather bag that will protect it very nicely and have a pocket with enough room for a blue box power supply.

They may not be doing new custom work yet, after Glenn handed off the company, but it's worth getting in touch. Super nice folks.

you can check also Gruvgear... don't have standard point, I have Omega, but it will be a great fit! check pic..

Btw, you can move around these, how you call it those side spongy things, they are attached with Velcro....
The bass player’s function, along with the drums, is to be the engine that drives the car… everything else is merely colours.
