Steve Swallow interview
« on: July 17, 2018, 08:19:05 PM »
A nice way to spend an hour and a quarter :

Anecdotes include how he first picked up an electric bass, how his tunes got into the Real Book, to name two and ends with a short tune played by him and Sco.

Just watched it; wonderful!  Thanks for the link.  I've watched a few interviews in this series, and always intend to watch more.  It's a great series.

Finally made sometime for this.

wow

His speech mirrors his playing, both are beautiful.  My favorite was hearing him talk about his first “free” note, playing improvised music with Paul Bley.  His enthusiasm for discovering a deeper form of music within himself...

The closing was the cherry on top.

Thanks for posting that Ryan.

Loved the interview.  I remember Swallow from his days of playing with Gary Burton, Larry Coryell, and Roy Haynes. One of the first "jazz" concerts I attended.  Swallows bass lines are always so tasteful perfectly complementing those with whom he is playing.

Also first heard Steve Swallow with the Gary Burton Quartet at the 1969 Newport Jazz Festival and have been a fan ever since. Jerry Hahn was playing guitar with them and I loved his playing, too. Hard to say anything negative about Gary or Roy, both monster players, all-in-all an excellent band and great introduction to Gary Burton's music for me. Still need to cut some time loose to watch the interview but very much looking forward to it...

Watching Jerry rip on his Gibson bass, post-gigs is what made Steve try playing with pick.

Thanks David, for editing the link!

Just watched the last one you linked.  There's a lot of gems scattered throughout the interview.  And it covers a lot of area; composition, improvisation, living in the New York jazz scene in the sixties.  Thanks for the link; I saved it until the right time to watch it came, which turned out to be tonight.

I have grandkids crawling all over me, so I'll check the interview later - but in the meantime, let's listen to him play:
