Phil Jones Big Head Headphone Amp.
« on: July 07, 2018, 02:59:06 PM »
I picked this up along with the Phil Jones head phones and I have to say that it was for me a very good buy for practicing without driving everyone out of the house.

I got so tired of using the VOX headphone amplifier with it's crappy tone and awkward positioning plugging into the input jack on a bass that something had to be done.

It's small, great tone, rechargeable usb battery and it just behaves really well. The headphone too.Hooks up to my phone, laptop, portable CD player whatever.

Don't regret a single penny I spent on it just like I don't with my Alembic.

Another vote for the Big Head here. I had the same path: Vox first, but knew immediately it was not a match for Alembics. Tried the Big Head and never looked back. I use it a lot. It works well with AKG headphones.

I've got one of these..they work great for practicing and figuring out tunes.  My only beef is the volume isn't really loud enough to me, but I guess thats a good thing or else I'd be blowing my ears out.  Second criticism is the headphone plug works it way out of the jack at times.  I keep meaning to contact PJB about that latter issue but keep forgetting.

I have to agree with other's perspectives on: (a) PJB speakers/cabs; (b) Big Head headphone amp; and (c) headphones.  All have been of excellent quality and when a speaker went bad on my 8T cabinet, they had a replacement at my door within 2-days.  However, I do remember someone from the forum having difficulty with a pair of their headphones

I'm another fan of the PJB big head and initially picked up the head phones as well but I didn't like the sound from them at all and preferred the sound of my run of the mill sony headphones. Sent the PJB headphones back and now I use my Senheiser headphones. No idea what model but they sound great.
I had a couple of those vox headphone amps. The first one was a gift a gift and to be honest I did like the sound of them but they were too flimsy and on that one after about 6 months the headphone socket came out and that was the end of that one, i bought another and on that one jack plug broke off. That was the driver for me to get something more durable hence the PJB.  I Haven't used it for recording yet.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

I've been over, around, under, and through with headphone rigs for bass:  The old Yamaha 'Producer Series' stuff, the Raven box, you name it.  The little stuff was always let down by being battery powered and/or they'd only drive $10 headphones.

Finally I quit fooling around, bought a Mackie 1202 mixer (the newer style with the VLZ inputs) and serious Audio Technica headphones, called it a day.  Can not crash the inputs, the A-T's let me hear anything, and you can mix anything in or send anything out.  Put a tube preamp with a good XLR out inline, and it's just the best.
