Low output from Series I bridge pickup
« on: July 03, 2018, 10:49:45 AM »
Hello everyone!
About a month ago I've noticed that the bridge pickup in my '77 Series I bass became a bit quieter than it used to be. It happened right after I replaced the 1/4 output jack and wired it in mono so I attributed the change in output to changed wiring and just raised the pickup's output with the internal trimpot. However, about a week ago I recorded some bass tracks and noticed that the bridge pickup got its volume back and actually became louder due to the cranked trimpot. So I realized that there's a problem. The next day the volume was low again. I plugged the bass with 1/4 jack, with 5-pin and power supply in stereo and mono — it's always the same.
I wanted to swap the bridge and the neck pickup leads to determine what's the source of the problem — the pickup or the preamp — but I couldn't disconnect the pickups from the preamp board. Those old coaxial connectors are so tight — almost like glued together. I just don't dare to pull with more force because I'm afraid to break them.
Inside the cavity there are no apparent issues like loose solder joints or broken wires.
I found a thread with a similar problem, probably more severe: http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=4881.0 But there is nothing written about the solution for the problem. So any input will be much appreciated!
