Attachemtnof the Nut???
« on: June 12, 2018, 10:28:46 AM »
Hello,
A very sad thing happened to my SS graphite neck Series bass today. It fell out of the stand. I took the bass off, put it on the stand, didn't think much about it, and then it.... Hit the floor. First on the rear strap peg, then down onto the front on the concrete floor. OOOOOOUCH!  Really sad as this bass was pristine, since coming from the factory about a year and half ago.... Sad. The only damage I can find is hit square on the nut on the forth string. It knocked a little finish off right where the nut sits on the head stock, on the side of the neck. In my endeavors of string changes etc. The nut appeared to be bonded to the head stock. That is not the case now. The nut came loose. It also appeared to have knocked the action down a little lower especially on the E string. I raised the bridge height about a turn because the E string was buzzing a little bit, where it didn't before. So here I am, a nut no longer bonded to the head stock, and a little bit of fractured finish. My first question is does anyone out there in Alembic land know anything about how the nut gets bonded back down? Cynoacrylate, thin epoxy? Or or or.... ALso is there a "standard height" that the E string should be over the first fret? My records show that before this happened the E string  height was .032". Does that sound reasonable or or or..... Not sure if the pic came through but trying.... Very....

WOW, just looked at the spelling in the subject line... Should be "Attachment of the Nut".... What a dummy... Where's auto correct when you need it...

quick .02 cents worth;

Possible tweaking of the neck may have happened, which the truss rod might fix, if it is a double. Oh wait, graphite necks do/do not have truss rods? People often replace nuts using, oh heck, what's that quick glue called (senior moment here)? The nut slot should be clean for that.

Sounds like you were lucky on this drop!

Just a drop of superglue - it's only there so it doesn't fall off when you change the strings.

I don't think that the fall could have messed with your action unless the neck is actually broken, or maybe a machine head is damaged and bent?

Reattach the nut, put on new strings, and see where you are.

You can also use superglue to arrest any of the finish damage from getting worse. Just a scant amount will do ya!

(Couldn't see the pictures but you're welcome to email them to me)

I got the pictures - they were very tiny! But from what I can see, it looks like there was a small chip in the finish near where the nut was mounted. While it's not the prettiest thing, sealing that with a small drop of superglue should keep it from getting worse. You can put the glue on a card then transfer it over on a toothpick - you need very little.

And for mounting the nut, do a dry fit, then use just one drop of glue in the center then plop the nut in place and hold.

Thanks Mica,
Did the super glue thing, that worked good. I put some in the area on the nut "bed" area. Put 1000 grit sticky back sand paper on the bottom of the nut itself, and used it to flatten the nut bed. Glued it down, put some of the AWESOME Alembic new strings on Works like a CHAMP! Checked the action height on each string at the first, 12th, 24th frets. The E string is about .010 lower at the first, and they all seem to be a little lower across the board.... Strange, but it all works GREAT! So it has a little tiny bit of cosmetic damage up there. As one of my air racing buddies would always say.... They'll never see it from the grand stands.....Thank you for your help and support. Carry on, make noise!

It's the little things like that that make it truly yours. None of my instruments are all that pretty up close....
