Poor Nigel's "Big Red" 1968 Gibson EB-2d for sale.
« on: April 26, 2018, 12:59:39 PM »
Hi everybody-
I picked up a bunch of T.K. Shaw's stuff (AKA "poor nigel") at an estate auction. Sadly he passed away a few years back and had no heirs, may he rest in peace. Mostly speakers, cabs, and his "twin amp" (some of the stuff listed in his "garage sale" posts) but also his Gibson EB2-d he dubbed "Big Red". I know he was particular about his basses and wanted things to be played and enjoyed, so I wanted to offer it here first before I put it up on Reverb. It's complete and in nice shape other than a spot of buckle rash, and has the original case. Asking $3K shoot me an e-mail and I can send pictures if you're interested. pomaikai67@gmail.com

I also have his P-audio 21" drivers and will be selling those. I'd like $800 plus shipping for the pair (2 for the price of 1, they weigh @ 75lbs each).

Before anyone asks, no there were no Alembic basses in the auction, he had either sold them before he passed, or arranged for them to go to someone as best I can tell. I did get a few parts, but I'm keeping those and they are not for sale.

I feel a strange connection to him having some of his gear around and after reading his various posts here. I grew up in Santa Rosa and some of my best friends worked at Alembic over the years, so I knew from his "stuff" and doing some internet digging he was a kindred spirit. As he said in one of his posts "This showcase is for the next owner to read somewhere down the road, when my turn is up, again. Whoever you are, enjoy! You've got a dandy bass there Mister, or Sister." I intend to honor all his gear this way, play the heck out of it and enjoy it, or make sure it goes to a good home. RIP Thomas K. Shaw aka "poor nigel".

Sad to hear this.  I was wondering why he hadn't been around lately.  Over the years he seemed to disappear for a while every now and then, but always came back.

Sorry to hear about Tom. I knew he had had medical issues for sometime so figured he was just having a flareup that had kept him away. I bought some equipment from him when he was still in Maine and it was delivered in good shape and fairly priced. I'm sure his Alembics when to good homes as he was kind of particular about who he would sell , and I suspect give, to.

Wow that's sad news about Thomas ( poor nigel). I have just re-read the emails I exchanged with him around the time we were negotiating the sale of one of his basses. Even with challenges of his condition he still had a great sense of humour and turn of phrase.

Thankfully I was one of the people he felt was right for his old Series II Europa bass. He emailed me after I made some tasteful comments on the thread about his bass thanking me for the comments then told me how particular he was about whom he sells his gear to, and that he thought it was time for me to be the next owner of this bass.

For him it certainly wasn't just about money and he wanted it to go to someone who was going to keep and play it like it deserves to be played. His only request was that if I decided to sell the bass, I should pick a worthy owner and not just any guy with the bucks.... "What if a kid bought it and decided it needed Jazz pickups in it?  Ahhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
I'm really honoured to have his "old bass" even though he bought it as new old stock and hardly ever played it. It is an amazing instrument and I still can't believe it's mine.

All the best with the sale of your items.
R.I.P Thomas.

I wish I could have met him when he was still around, he seemed like such a cool guy, and this area is a bit of a music desert.

I think he would be happy that some of his junk ended up with another tone snob/gear hoarder, and not flipped on craigslist like I saw with the case and mic stand that someone else got. I'm only selling the Gibson to help cover the costs of the rest of the stuff I plan on keeping and playing, hopefully it will get in the right hands and I can be a good steward of some of the things that brought him joy.

What rotten news. I had dealings with Thomas several times over the years and, like Jazzyvee, always had positive interactions. He had a great sense of humor about life even with his difficulties. I will miss him a lot.

This is very sad news about Toms passing.  Like others, we had exchanged a few emails and
a couple of calls.  I had always been interested in his Series bass with the moon and stars inlays.
Thomas always had the Alembic vibe,  RIP my friend.
