Hey Guys,
I just received my SC brown bass. I have never even seen an Alembic in person so needless to say I was blown away. I am still in awe of the tonal capabilities of this bass, truly outstanding as is the harmonics and clarity.
However, I am having a tough time with a couple of things. The pickup select knob is directly in the way of my playing position. I am also having a tough time with the short scale.
If anyone has a 33 or 34 scale neck 4 string without the pickup selector switch in the same position as the SC brown lets talk! Obviously I would be interested in a bass of equal value.
Anyway, I am now sold on Alembics-I just have to find the right one for me!

Sorry to read that the SC brown bass is not working out. I'm still looking into getting one. I wonder if we were looking at the same bass. The seller (thelowend) of the one that I was looking at, said that it was no longer available three days ago. :-(

Does the pickup select knob get in the way of slapping? How is the string tension on the 30 scale?

Yea JR, same bass. You know me, I had the Stambaugh. Anyway, the string tension is amazing on this bass and it sounds absolutely incredible!
The select knob does not get in the way of slapping in anyway, only when I double thump does it get in my way. Im sure 98% of the other bass players in the world would not be hindered in anyway at all. My playing style is a bit unorthodox;)! Anyway, shoot me an e-mail JR

I am the opposite. I have been playing Alembic short scale basses for more than 25 years now. When I play an Alembic with the pickup selector in the new location, I get lost. I find myself trying to turn a switch that just isn't there! I suggest giving it a while and get used to it. I find when it is located between the two volume knobs it is hard to access. I guess I am just brainwashed. I had Alembic make me a custom a few years ago. I wish I would have had them put the switch in a more traditional spot. I still can't get used to it. One day, I hope to get them to move it for me.

I think you have a great bass on your hands. Just give it more time.

Another view. It seems to me from what I've read in the past that Alembic moved the selector because many players were finding that it got in the way when playing slap style. I don't know, I've never played one. Perhaps more feedback from members on this subject would be helpful.

I agree with MIchael: give it time!
I play a 5 string bass with a Wiiiiiiiii-ide spacing, I guess it's wider than comfort (see Bonnie at the Series II dep). Traditonal spacing is narrow! I remember things that Mica said that playing that narrow spacing is a question of getting comfortable with it and it takes time. I wish I could try your bass once but alas ...the only thing I can trade is an SWR amp HA!
