That's pretty cool.  At first I thought it was an open air observation platform.  What's the thing in the center of the room?

So it's a panorama that was originally sketched in open air, on top of a dune, by the artist standing inside the glass cylinder, marking the panoramic view on the glass that you see mounted on its easel, and a group of artists then produced the paintings on curved canvases working from the sketch. There's daylight filtering from above.

Today we went driving along the south circuit of the DeKalb County Barn Quilt Tour.  Yeah, there's a thing around here called "barn quilts"; squares of quilt patterns that they paint on plywood & hang on their barns (inspired by the "hex signs" on Pennsylvania Dutch barns).

[A quick edit because I forgot to include the names of the patterns; they are, top to bottom, Arrowhead, Farmer's Daughter, Variable Star, Lone Star 2, Flying Geese, Drunker Passage, 8-Point Star, 4-Point Star, and Nordic Star]

Hm, wonder what they would look like as fret inlays? Thanks for sharing!

Hmmm... barn quilts, so that's what those are. I'd been noticing them around here too, and just thought they were a 'new thing' to do to dress up an old barn. Did not know there was a deeper meaning. I'll look for a couple here in Mason's Cove.

The maker's name escapes me at the moment, but I seem to remember a Japanese luthier who used colored wood marquetry for inlay. Not exactly like this, but the same kaleidoscope effect, Adriaan.

I might have to try something like that, myself.
