I would imagine it has something to do with being in close proximity to train tracks, given that a train whistle approaching and passing is the classic example of the Doppler Effect.

You are close, Bill, but the figure behind the engine blows a trumpet.

Painting murals on buildings in the downtown district was a thing in Roanoke a few years ago... some of them are quite a spectacle. This one is on one of my old gig threads.

I was struck by Adriaan's post yesterday; at the time I was out for a walk in a similar rural area, half a world away from his dirt road. So if you just kept walking down that road...?

In my experience, all highways are the same - but every dirt road is unique.

Nice, Dave!  That's the kind of road that would have me grinning ear to ear (and have Her cranking Her seat flat, covering Her eyes, and sobbing in terror.  Love Her to death, but there are times that I wonder what possessed me to marry a flatlander........)

Indeed, fine group!  :)

I snapped a couple on a gray evening walk Friday...

*Dave, just this very morning, I drove out the Blue Ridge Parkway to tour a remote water plant. Nice up here. :D
