It's turned back to cold, grey, and well... unpleasant here today, but yesterday was about as nice a day as one could ask for in mid-Winter. Instead of walking my regular route, I parked at the Rt. 311 Trailhead and hiked a few miles of the Appalachian Trail.

I should probably include a note for those in our little circle here not familiar with the Appalachian Trail... it's actually a pretty big thing, just happens to run within a couple miles of my place.

I have a few (much younger) friends who thru-hiked the AT. I've done a fair handful of the southern miles myself over the years. What a great opportunity to be a short drive away for a day hike. Thanks for sharing, and so good to see your recovery allowing for such activity.

Read a short article just the other day about a guy who celebrated his 63rd by starting at the southern terminus of the AT; hit the Maine end 6 months later.  Yeah, a pretty big thing.

I envy your proximity to even a small chunk; that would probably be my daily route.

Nice shots!

It's turned quite cool here as well.  Supposed to get two inches of snow today, but it missed us.

Between Friday night & Monday morning we got about 8".  Tomorrow's predicted high is -19°F; dunno what the wind chill is supposed to be.

How cool is it there, Dave?

Finishing a short work trip that finds me in Tennessee staying near Newport.  Never enough time to truly explore when working.  Those mountains really do call me, to hike, to climb to get lost and find myself... heading back to the “polar vortex” today. :-/

I know Newport, Paul... used to do some running down there in back in the day. Master guitar-maker John Arnold is in Newport, Tennessee... been to his shop a coupla' times.

Yeah, it's gonna' be a tough night here too with the windchill, and for the next few days, but maybe 60° again next week. This has been a strange Winter. Or maybe I've just had more time to notice?

Gregory it is always a shame that my work trips never really allow for any social/ site seeing events.  It really is beautiful here - even with the snow.  John is obviously a high level craftsman.

I’ll be back in Milwaukee tonight.  Brrr.

The Fretboard Journal article didn't show the pictures, so I clicked on the link to Guitar Gallery; didn't see the Jimmie Rodgers Weymann - but they do have a guitar with back & sides of spalted Brazilian; check this out!

Peter; we're pretty far from the really cold temps.  Predicted high today is 32F, low tonight 13F, high tomorrow 35F.  Windchill temps today mostly in the teens.

Paul; Newport isn't very far from here.  Too bad you're headed back so quickly.

It was very cold, but very clear for today's walk. After physical therapy this morning, (bundled up tight) I hit the Wolf Creek Greenway Trail and walked about 6 miles of it across the small Town of Vinton, Virginia. No idea who has fixed this old place up so nice, but it was a run-down old horse farm back when I used to read the water meters in this area many years ago. Looks great now.

On our drive down to Anaheim last week. All the small windmills in Livermore have been replaced with these massive ones.
