Always coming back to Alembic...

I've been playing Jazzes, Precisions, and even Steinbergs for a year or two, but I decided to get my Epic back out.  As usual, I was stunned with the clarity, power, and sheer sustain that it gives me.


In love again.  Tonight was the first time I had a chance to play through my latest rig, a Mesa D-800+ with Mesa Subway 112 cabinets.  Impressive.  Took me a little while to EQ to taste compared to how I normally run it with my FrankenJazz, but once there it was SOLID.


I'm in my happy place right now.

Guess I'm a late-bloomer...

More and more lately, my Alembics have me questioning why I ever play anything else. And that's hard to admit out loud, because I like those basses too... but when I realize the pure, raw sound of Alembic basses is already doing everything I need... if I weren't such a sentimental old sap, the others might already be gone.

Another late bloomer here relatively speaking and I gig alembic basses exclusively although I have a couple of other brand basses that I use when travelling away from home for a long weekend or something but not for gigging. Although I think personally they have everything I want in a bass, sound/playability/reliability/build quality/aesthetics etc. etc,  I respect the fact that not everyone wants the same awesome, clean, balanced, articulate, responsive, powerful hifi sound as me. ( except you guys). 
In one to one chats I've had with other bass players, all acknowledge alembic's position in bass heirarchy even though they find their personal sound elsewhere, or may not even like alembics. Usually the only complaint is the price.

I just wish I had more gigs so I can use them more. :-)

I can't say I've "come back" to Alembic after owning one for a short time, but it's been a revelation.  In terms of playability, sound, construction, and, well, everything, Alembic to me is not just a nicely built bass guitar, but an extension of my body.  Yes, that's a bit of hyperbole, and so be it.  I picked up my Mike Lull Precision for the first time in a couple of months and it felt clunky and not nearly as easy or fun to play.  And Mike Lull makes THE BEST Fender designed basses around IMHO.  I've owned a lot of nice basses over the years - Spector, Pedulla, Lakland, Mike Lull, MusicMan - but nothing compares to Alembic.  I wish I had purchased one years ago.

I knew from hearing how Stanley was creating these amazing tones and moods in his music that my bass playing had to be on alembic. Opportunity, hard work and a good saving ethic made that happen. Fortunately owning an alembic has nothing to do with my ability to play bass well, just ability to afford it. But playing what you love is so inspiring and im sure i have become a better player because these basses are honest sounding and hide nothing. Good and bad technique is reproduced clearly in the highest clarity. They are like that good friend who always lets you know when you are doing the right or wrong thing. The only difference is Alembic lets everyone at the gig know too!!!
