Amazon's Long Strange Trip
« on: June 02, 2017, 10:14:35 PM »
Senior management and I just finished watching Episode 1 of Amazon Original's Long Strange Trip, a four hour documentary on the Dead that was released today on Amazon Prime.  The first episode was OUTSTANDING!!!!  If the rest is up to the same standards, this may go down as one of, if not the greatest music documentaries of all time!

Gee, can you tell I like it?

I just watched the trailer, which does look good.

Here are the episodes:

1. Act I - It's Alive

The band is put together and commits itself to constant change.
Runtime: 51 minutes

2. Act II - This Is Now

The Grateful Dead sabotage their chances at superstardom, and find success on their own terms.
Runtime: 43 minutes

3. Act III - Let's Go Get In The Band

It's not clear where the fans end and the band begins.
Runtime: 38 minutes

4. Act IV - Who's In Charge Here?

Jerry wants the Grateful Dead to have no leader, no rules... and no purpose. Trouble ensues.
Runtime: 42 minutes

5. Act V - Dead Heads

It's the 1980s, and the Dead's fans seek adventure in this "New Lame America" as Garcia calls it.
Runtime: 46 minutes

6. Act VI - It Becomes Everything

Jerry will put up with the adulation until they "come for me with the cross and nails."
Runtime: 58 minutes

Total runtime: 4 hours, 38 minutes

I'm not a Prime member, so I'm not able to watch it; but for those of you with Prime, it should be a treat.

I watched the first segment just now, it reminded me of what I really loved about the scene.  I watched the second segment, which reminded me of how many worlds I've come since first climbing on the bus...

When I saw thread this today and my first thought was that you were referring to Amazon's recent purchase of Whole Foods.  This is a lot better.  I may even have Amazon Prime as part of my television subscription but will have to check.  After recently changing my internet/television sub. I had no idea that with it I now have access to Hulu, Netflix, and a heck of a lot of other "special" services.  However, I still see a valid the point Bruce Springsteen made a number of years ago...

Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched 'round and 'round 'til half-past dawn
There was fifty-seven channels and nothin' on
Well now home entertainment was my baby's wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
There's fifty-seven channels and nothin' on

The only thing that's changed is the number of channels

I loved the first two segments. I found that from there, it started getting more depressing, as we all know how the story ends.

Edwin's right about that, I got something in my eye watching the last one. I had to do it though, just had to...
