Loose Side LED Switch Repair
« on: April 27, 2017, 10:14:17 PM »
Hi!  What is the best/safest way to trouble shoot and repair my Side LED switch.  I rarely use it, but I now have to "jiggle" it to get a connection such that the LED's turn on and stay on?  Turn off is no problem.

Thanks for your help!

Hi, George.  The first step is to "exercise" the switch.  Quickly turn it on/off/on/off, etc., at least 50 times.  If that doesn't work, get in touch with Mica.  I seem to recall that I had a similar problem with my Further a few years ago and it turned out there was a bad batch and Alembic replaced it.

I have the same problem with the switch on my Europa. I have changed it but no joy. Turning off is easy but turning on is the jiggle thing. I've learnt to live with it but could do with remembering to mention it to Mica next time I get her on the phone.
The sound of Alembic is medicine for the soul!

The switches do like to be used and may suffer if they are neglected. Open the backplate and see if your switch has a red body or a light green body - I bet it's red. We recently changed to a different switch maker because the red ones quality had degraded (and the price kept going up!). They used to be US made, then they migrated to Mexico and then to Costa Rica. The last ones we got were the Cost Rica ones. The main problem is that when the factory moves, not all the personnel does.  Not every procedure or recipe is fully documented, the expertise and experience of the workers can't really be transferred. The recent versions of the lubricant in the switches can crust over when it's not used. When you use it the first time, a big chunk dislodges and can interfere with the contact. This never happened on the old switches. When they announced they were moving the factory again (guess where?) we jumped ship and got another manufacturer that is mostly US made (some parts are made in Mexico) but importantly they are higher quality.

At any rate, as Bill and Vince suggest, exercise the switch. Flick it a whole bunch, like 50 times, and it may stay right if you are kind to it and operate it a few times a week. If you have the red switch and want to replace it, just email or call me to order one of the new ones.

All, thanks for your thoughts.  Will commence exercising and take a look under the hood.
