Just passin' it on...
« on: April 24, 2017, 11:01:36 AM »
Just got home late last night from a road trip down to Carolina... a standing gig at a winery tasting room, followed by a big jam at my Cousin's place over in Boone, a quaint college town in the mountains of western North Carolina. Cousin Graham's musical circle of friends are a great bunch to hang out and play music with... on the menu was a good helping of some country blues, oldtyme, even some swing.

Took the Distillate along this time, and was pleasantly surprised somebody else actually recognized it... though he'd never seen one in person, this fella' Brandon had seen (recent) pictures of both Phil Lesh and Dave Schools with theirs. I really enjoyed watching the expressions while he was playing mine, and remembered vividly the first time someone handed me their Alembic. (a Distillate 5-string) I couldn't resist leaning over and flicking the Q-switch just to see the reaction. I didn't even know there was another bass player in the house, but Brandon it turned out, was a monster bassist. Those of us that play these things understand what's going on in this candid picture... I thoroughly enjoyed listening to my bass as an observer too.

Other than that cool moment, there were some really sweet old guitars there, and a couple newer ones too.

In attendance:

1930 Martin 0-18

1932 Martin OM-18

1955 Martin 0-18 T (tenor guitar)

1947 Martin Style 2-15 mandolin

1944 Gibson 'Southern Jumbo"

1944 Gibson J-45

1940 Gibson L-00

1959 Gibson A-5 mandolin

1920 Gibson A-2 mandolin

1935 Gibson RB-3 banjo

And joining the California delegation:

1929 National Style 0 brass-body

2013 National Tri-cone wood-body

Also a very cool custom Santa Cruz D. I didn't catch the year, but that was an awesome guitar.

Couple pics...

Sounds and looks like a fun couple of days!

With all of those vintage guitars and mandolins present the pressing question has to be...does your cousin operate a museum or just have a very special and fortunate group of friends?

One additional question I have to ask as I always do nowadays when I am in the presence of vintage instruments...what percentage of the players were of an older vintage than their instruments?

I always have a blast down there, and wish I could go more often than a couple times a year. Even being distant Cousins, there's a very natural rhythmic chemistry between us... stuff just clicks. Sorta ' makes sense though.

Graham and his buddies are primarily players more so than collectors... they actually play these vintage guitars (etc.) out at gigs. Most of their instruments (cool vintage pieces that they are) would be considered 'player-grade' by most real collectors. They've all had repair work, or outright restoration so they can still be enjoyed. A few of those listed are mine that I bring down for the show-n-tell portion, but everyone usually brings a trunk-full. We just make an afternoon of test - driving old guitars. Sometimes a mysterious jar of spirits will appear in the circle too.  (or did you miss that detail in the picture?)  ;D

I don't think any of those guys date back to the 20's, 30's, or 40's, but definitely some 50's models. We're not sure about Banjo Steve there... he's got one of those faces.  ;D

I really did enjoy watching Brandon on my Distillate. One minute he was plucking along on an old open-back banjo, and singing a Tom T. Hall song, the next he was playing this incredible funk groove on bass, like the chasm between them was nothing. Guy was a gifted musician, period. And a super-nice fella' too. Another thing I like about that bunch- there's no competitiveness or ego trips... they're just enjoying an afternoon playing music. The exchange of ideas is a real inspiration.  8)

I've never seen a Santa Cruz that wasn't my-t-fine, this one included.

Good on these guys, I hate the idea of people 'collecting' vintage guitars and turning them into 'trailer queens' while telling themselves they're better investments than the market or traditional investments.  They need to be played.

It's always amazing when somebody who knows sees and plays an Alembic for the first time.  It's like seeing a UFO in broad daylight while you're sober, you don't have to pinch yourself.  Guys that know 'get it' RIGHT NOW, and then  . . . . .  they know.
