Rekindled Love
« on: April 15, 2017, 06:09:02 PM »
Indeed... I just got back home from a dep gig tonight with a reggae band. In fact for a change it was a guitar playing gig. After a lot of deliberation and prodding by my other half, I decided just before leaving home to take my Series I Dragon guitar to this gig. I took my Roland JC120 and did the guitar in stereo using the DS-5 with each pickup going into a channel in the amp and the line out from the amp going to the mixer. Equally important I decided not to take any effects at all and just go clean. However during soundcheck I felt it needed a tiny smidgen of chorus from the amp on the bridge pickup only.

I'm glad I did now because I think this was the first time I'd ever been able to set my amp far enough back and have enough time to EQ it properly so I can hear it clearly. Anyway that guitar sound awesome even the guys in the band noticed and commented on it after the gig. (and my playing thankfully). Most of the night was reggae chops and the occasional lead run or melody, and its what I would usually think using that guitar is overkill for. But the chops really sounded powerful and crisp, think and chunky on some songs and when I was doing some finger picking and melodic lines the sound was delicately sparkling and so clean and precise.

Something I've noticed on my bass before and now hearing better on the guitar, these alembics have a really fast attack. I've  never noticed anything wrong with the attack on any guitar I've ever owned but this one sounded much more immediate and posesses an extremely balanced powerful and clean sound.
I feel like i've just gone over some kind of threshold with my connection with this guitar so hopefully as I get more guitar gigs I will feel more inclined and comfortable to gig with it more often.

JC120's are, to me, as big a classic as a Twin Reverb or a Marshall stack.  They are really the ultimate 'clean' amp, as the twin internal amps are built to power amp specs with distortion figures in point-zero-zero range, as opposed to the typical guitar amp power end that's running 5 to 10% distortion.  Coupled with the built-in, analog tremolo and chorus circuits, if you need what it does, there's nothing else like it.  With any kind of single-coil axe, for choppy rhythm guitar, they kill.

I've always hoped to snag one to keep around the house as a bass practice amp (trust me, it's delicious), hopefully one from the 80's with JBL's installed from Japan.

That connection from your fingers to your ears, that fast attack (I call it immediacy) is a very hard thing to describe, but it's there when there seems to be a 'right now' sensation as if you were playing an acoustic instrument, and I wonder if it can be measured . . . . .

I agree the JC120 is a great amp. I don't know how old mine is but I think it's pretty vintage. I've played bass through it in the house a few times. I did however try it in a bi-amp setup a while back with an individual F1-x on each pickup and then took a feed from HF out of the bridge pickup f1-x into a JC120. It sounded good. Unfortunately it's probably not something I'd be able to get set up at a gig but it would be lovely to.

Here's a Roland link to the history of the JC's including a 200w stack (!), and a single (??) 15 version.
