I need advice on top wood checking
« on: February 23, 2017, 06:20:27 PM »
I am in the process of purchasing a used Fodera with a Buckeye Burl top. The bass is about 6 years old and has what looks like a satin finish but has some checking. Is that normal for Buckeye without a gloss finish? I know on some vintage instruments checking adds value. Do you think it will hurt the value of this bass now and/or in the long term?

Thanks in advance!
Darrell

Finish checking to me, means micro cracks that you see in real old guitars with a gloss finish. If it was a 1950's Les Paul or Strat, there may be some value added. Matter of taste I guess. I have a 1965 Hagstrom 12 string that has a lot of checking, and nobody wants to buy it. For a 6 year old satin finish, checking would be strange, and would make me wonder if it was stored in an adverse environment, like an attic in Arizona. My vote would be reduced value. Just my $0.02 :)

While there are some who like checking on old instruments, checking is finish damage, and will always lower the value.

Any time my friend. I see you will be in Cincinnati in March. I may be in the area, and will make arrangements to catch your show. Sounds fun! Cheers!
