Some preamp settings to share
« on: February 05, 2017, 06:18:43 PM »
I had some time today to dig into to my preamp settings using my Series II BoP II in stereo and felt the need to share.  I haven't been overly happy with the tone I have been getting from my Grace Design Felix preamp with this specific Alembic. DR Hi Beams haven't been getting it done for me lately either so I threw on some GHS Boomers that were staring at me from the shelf, something I have not tried before on any Alembic. I was pleseantly surprised. They sound very nice and even, quick, and have decent tension. Thanks Jimmy J, I can see why you dig them.

The new approach (for me - sorry if this is redundant somewhere on the Club) I took to begin dialing was to keep both filters, volumes, and Qs wide open and the master vol. around 70%.  Here are the settings I used on on each channel of the Felix preamp. I figured if I can get the bass to sound great with filters and Qs wide open then anything removed should be usable too. Before the lows just weren't tight and the highs too brash.

Channel 1 - Neck P/U -  QSC GX7 channel 1 - MarkBass 2x10
Channel 2 - Bridge P/U - QSC GX7 channel 2  - PJB 4x5 Compact 4

I used the notch filter on both channels of the preamp (dip switch on the side let's you switch between a HP and Notch for each channel). This is what really tightened up the low end, before I was using the HP setting all the way off. Chan 1 - neck pickup I used the low mid Q dip switch (lower freq range) and higher mid q range on the bridge pickup. Low mids at about 170hZ and hi mids set at 8k.

This is all subject to change of course if I find something better but this is sure sounding pretty swell.

I should add this is my ultra portable stereo rig set up. Even if I have to use other amps or speakers.

Anybody else care to share some Alembic stereo onboard and outboard preamp settings, gear (Old or New), techniques, etc. to give a whirl that mimic some great live and/or recorded tones?

I did some comparisons of tubes in my F-2B a while back.

Ahh yes, I need to get back into my F1-Xs, I am, at the moment trying to get my portable rig set up to it's fullest potential. I would love to get my hands on an Alembic Mini stereo F1-Xs device without tubes like this one:
