Relocating a knob
« on: January 11, 2017, 07:15:12 PM »
Very curious if anyone has ever had a knob relocated on a Series bass (that was in the way) and if so what was done to fill the hole so that it retained it's charm and value?  If so are there photos to share?

A good professional fix is to plug the hole, then inlay a close-as-humanly-possible piece of veneer to match up with the surrounding top grain pattern. Followed by a tedious finish touch-up. Won't be the cheapest, but definitely do-able. In my experience, it's easier to hide a fix like this on dark wood.

Cheap and dirty fix might be as simple as a black rubber grommet, which would be seen but not readily noticed in a cluster of black knobs. But we're talking about a Series bass here. Like you said- charm and value retention.  ;)

Which knob do want to relocate?

On the older Series instruments where the pickup selector is near the neck the most common thing was to cover the hole with a solid brass plate. You could also have something inlaid. For the others I've mostly seen metal buttons used to cover them.

Quite a few basses that have had this done have an inlay put in the old position.
