UK dealer question for Mica

Hi Mica.  
Looking at your international dealers page you still list House of Guitars inc the bass centre as the sole UK distributor (this is who I got my epic from). However, I've come across a dealer called Bass World based in Maidstone, Kent who now claim to be the UKs sole alembic distributor. Who's telling the truth, and more importantly can't you convince a dealer in Scotland to take over the role.

... perhaps someone with a store in Edinburgh who gets visits periodically from a bassist with an Epic 5 and admires a lamented fretless player from the 70s and 80s?

You almost lost me there for a moment. Yes I'm a great admirer of Jaco but I've had my nickname as long as I can remember - short for jackson I guess. I'm currently dreaming of a fretless rogue 5 but mrs J says I have to finish the decorating and put the kids through college before I can spend ny money on myself ;-(
As for dealers in edinburgh getting in Alembics - to paraphrase an earlier thread, if it's not Fender/Gibson or Ibanez they won't stock it.  
BTW, how does your fretless epic sound - much the same as the fretted?

Hey Graeme,  
It has that underlying midrange of a set neck, but I'm still just an egg. I haven't learned enough to swear it's not my setup (which I've altered this August to try for more MWAH) Typically I sound a bit like a clean upright, not a bad sound. When I dig in on the E and A, I can get a good growl. I play with my amp and basses set close to flat, with a very small amount of bass and treble boost, then adjust the pickup blend for tonal variance. More bridge gives greater mwah.  
The fretted has more growl, a piano tone A, and a really singing G. I run it much the same in terms of tone settings. (I'm a creature of habit) Depending on my touch and the age of my strings, I can get a marvelous woody tone from the fretted that I haven't found on the fretless yet. This is my prime search at the moment, although I think that might well be the walnut top on the fretted. I love it!

Thanks for the reply mike. The reason I was asking is that the 'new' dealer in kent i mentioned above is advertising an orion 5 fretless at a pretty good price - coco-bolo top and fingerboard - so i was just wondering how the set neck compared with a neck through.

Bass World is actually the importer, and for a while House of Guitars was the only place the basses were on display. We've sent a message to Bass World to see if they want any change to the distributors page.  
 
That Coco Bolo bass you're referring to is quite nice. We haven't made many in that configuration.
