Something else to consider is the particular strap your using.

Moody and Levy make some very expensive, but excellent, straps... and they can literally make a bass seem MUCH lighter than other straps.  I've found that it varies from person to person (and bass to bass), though.  You have to experiment with different straps on different basses.  My Moody strap works great on the Alembic Elan 5, but not so well on my short-scale Stanley bass.  However, the Levy works great on my short scale.  If you experiment around, I believe you can get comfortable with just about any bass/weight.  The only thing that is difficult to overcome is neck-dive... but that's not a problem on this bass.

I have a friend (Brady Muckelroy) who makes very light basses on purpose.  He just built a 4 lb. 15 oz. bass.  Very impressive for the weight... but it comes at a cost (sound-wise).  A Europa with Cocobolo on Mahogany is a great choice of woods... far from light-weight, but an excellent sound.

The main thing is to play the bass that's right for you, Frank.  And it sounds like the Smith bass is working for you, my friend.

Peace,

Bryan

Thanks for the advice, Bryan!  I agree with you on the strap choice.  I love my 5-string Spoiler and the 4-string Persuader I owned before selling it.  I prefer to play 5-string (or 6) because many of the songs I play use the B-string.  I got rid of my 6-string because I found the Spoiler.  My preference is for Alembics but the Smith I found is a high quality boutique bass as well and I got it for a nice price a couple months ago, so I'm not ready to put it up for sale so soon.  Maybe if you were closer and I would play it, the temptation would be too much to resist :D

Good luck selling that beauty!!

Yes... long haul to TX from PA.  I bought it off the board here not too long ago, so I'm sure she'll sell soon.  Gonna make any 5-string player REAL happy, for sure.

That's what I've been told.  I paid $100 more for it about a month ago.  Just gotta find someone who's in the market for a 5-string Alembic.

OK guys... I'd rather sell this to someone here than pay eBay fees, etc... so making the deal too sweet to resist.

$2400 plus you pay shipping/insurance costs.

Don't pass this up if you're looking for a 5-string Alembic with a killer B string.. she's in pristine condition, gorgeous, sounds phenomenal and plays like butter.

All the info and pics are in the previous listing on this board (see "It's Back! Beautiful Elan 5 in Wineburst...").  Contact me at 512-868-7325 if you have q's.  Heck, I don't care if you buy it and resell it for a higher price down the road.

Beautiful 1995 Alembic Elan 5 in Wineburst with FretFX markers and OHSC.

I just purchased this bass a few weeks back and it is one of the most beautiful, amazing sounding basses I’ve ever played!  Perhaps the best sounding bass I’ve ever heard (though that’s a personal preference). However, no matter how much I try, I just can’t handle a 5-string neck (and I’ve owned several different ones).  I gave it one more shot with this bass (since the nut was smaller than standard size), and desperately wanted it to work out. I would say the shape and feel of this bass neck about as good as you’ll ever get on a 5-string... but I’m used to a VERY narrow neck (have several basses with a 1.5” nut), and all 5-strings (and even some 4-strings) simply feel too large for me.  So alas, I’m letting this beauty go, and will stick with 4-string basses.  Call me old school.

This is the history of this bass via previous owner:

>> The bass is in EXCELLENT condition. There is one tiny mark on the front of the bass (treble side, near the neck pickup, but too small to photograph) about the size of a pencil point. That's about it. I won't claim that it's mint, but it's about as close as one can get for a 21 year old bass.

The body is 5A quilt maple on maple, the neck has an ebony fingerboard on maple w/walnut veneers and is 34” scale. The controls are vol, pan and filter with q-switch and the pickups are an AXY56 at the neck and a Fatboy at the bridge. It has Schaller strap locks and tuners. The bass was purchased used in 2003 and sent back to Alembic for an overhaul. At that time it was refinished in Wineburst, the brass hardware was cleaned up and restored, the bronze Alembic logo and script were upgraded with 24k gold versions, the plastic truss rod cover and back plate were upgraded with brass versions, the bridge pickup was replaced and I got a new case. A year later, I added FretFX side markers and replaced the bridge pickup with a Fatboy.

Original hard shell case (with keys) is in very good condition (couple of scrapes, otherwise fine).  I’ll include a strap and cable if you’d like.  Price is $2800. No international sales and no trades. Text or call me (Bryan) at 512-868-7325 if you’re interested.
