DS5 Buzz
« on: September 24, 2016, 05:29:54 AM »
I started having a noise issue with my DS5 last night. It started out as a mild hum & progressed into a full blow loud buzz like if you touch your finger to the tip of a 1/4" cable plugged into an amp. It does this without the 5 pin cable plugged in to the DS5, so the issue isn't my bass, it's the DS5. I have only tried it in mono mode with the 1/4" cable going from the bass jack on the DS5 to my amp. It does power my bass & I get signal from my bass along with the loud buzz. I tried 2 different 1/4" cables to connect to the amp & it did it with both cables. I tried different electrical outlets in my house too & it does it on both.

This happened late last night so I haven't had much time to open it or troubleshoot. I will do that when I get home from work today, but I wanted to see if anyone has any suggestions what it could be before I send it back to the Mothership for repair? The unit is less than 2 years old.

Thanks for your help!

I had that problem and eventually found it only happened at home. I took the ds-5 to a musical instrument repair centre for checking out and they put additional smoothing capacitors. However it made no difference. Eventually i found it was my ethernet over mains power line plug connectors. That was after checking my power sockets and fixing a loose wire in one. I Got replacement ethernet adaptors and never had the problem since.

It just started doing it last night in the same room I always practice in, & it has never done it before. The only thing that was different is that I was running it into a SansAmp Para Direct DI I just got, but after the buzzing started I hooked the DS5 straight up to my amp without the 5 pin cable plugged in & the buzz is still there. So something has gone out on the DS5. I will open it up tonight & see if I see any loose wire or swollen capacitors or anything obvious.

Well, I hooked up my DS5 last night to check on the buzz, & it worked fine! No more buzz. I left it plugged in for a few hours trying to see if the buzz came back. but it never did. I played through it & my new SansAmp pedal & it sounded great! Must have been that UFO hovering over my house! LOL!
