FS/FT-1980 Series I - 32" scale - excellent condition [SOLD]
« on: August 02, 2016, 12:05:36 PM »
As some of you on the forum know, a lifetime dream was realized when I purchased this bass recently. I am 55 years old, although I am full time musician now, I spent at least 25 years in the construction trade and my body can't handle the weight of this amazing instrument...my shoulders and back are totally a mess after a 4 day stretch of gigs. So I will have to let this go and rethink my options. One of the switches is slightly bent but works fine. Also the neck is perfectly straight with medium gauge strings...that's with the truss completely loosened. High tension lights would work as well. This bass was sent back to the mothership in 2007 or 08'. In beautiful condition, sat in a case in a closet for 8 years(probably why the neck has a slight back bow with truss loosened). I paid $4800 for the bass and need to get exactly that back after shipping. I picked the bass up in person.
T
Trade Possibilities:
Series I (10lbs or less)
Distillate (32" scale)
Mark King (32" scale)
Modulus TBX 5 34" scale preferred
Modulus Q5 34" scale only
Thank you for looking folks. More pics to follow.....

Sorry to hear you have to sell it. Best of luck, surely someone will step up.

Bummed that you have to let it go!  :o

One option might be to put Alembic electronics in an instrument that's more ergonomically suited to you. Not the same, but still pretty amazing! I've got Alembic Activators in a Precision Bass and a Telecaster Bass and also in a fretless Guild M-85 short scale. Keep an eye out on eBay, Craigslist, here - there are deals to be had!

Deals on Craig's List?  I have four items on Chico Craig's List and every 'odd' (I'm being nice here) person in this area sends me e-mails about how much they want whatever, and hold it for them, and never show up - Over and over and over.  I have mainly found 'odd' _____'s there.  There are a hell of a lot of basses for sale for like $200 or less.  Ya, I'm just drawn to the place like a moth to a flame . . .  Speaking of which, I hear that is where you 'order' prostitutes from in this area.  They use some kind of code I'm too drugged out to figure out - Damn!  eBay is the black market of the world, and Craig's List is the flea market.  I will admit that Sacramento's Craig's List is probably much, much, much, much better than Chico's.  I actually saw a couple of instruments that were not made out of pine or clapboard there.  After all, this is an area where most people's livings are made off ripping the students off, one way or another.  Now I am getting political, so later . . .

Another thing - eBay is mainly done by mail - remotely.  Craig's List is meet the crazies in person . . .

Wow nice bass, an option that may keep you with it (I wouldn't want to let it go, and seems you don't either) is the Hover Harness (http://www.hoverharness.com/).  It puts all the weight on your hips, apparently there a guy in Australia (my back yard) who'd had an accident, wrecked his shoulders etc and thought he'd never be able to stand up to play again, and the hover harness has worked for him.  I was checking it out (saw the mention in other posts elsewhere here) though my main interest was my new SC Brown is a bit neck heavy (which it solves apparently), but as I read more (dig through the whole site) I liked the idea of not having the weight on my shoulder.  Anyway, for $75 USD you may be able to keep your lovely Series 1, I hope so!!!

I want Thomas's 1980/2015 Macassar Ebony Custom SII Electronics LSB, like my SC Brown, I've fallen for it, but I still have to pay the bank back $11k for the SC Brown.

I know this is a long shot... I have no affiliation with the seller but this struck me as being a nice bass.
A sweet Smith NT BT4 with Alembic pickups. Of course it would take a little more to get a filter setup in there. Thought it was worth posting.

Just a thought Craig- I seem to remember you had once contemplated Alembicizing your DeArmond Starfire.... maybe re-visit that thought?

Good luck selling that Series. It's a great-looking bass, really sorry it didn't work out for you, but boy howdy you've had some nice ones though. Hang in there, it'll happen.

["Yeah man...I had that thought as well....

The padded strap probably won't alleviate the weight problem for your back, it might just make it more confortable on your shoulder.

There was a guy that played around Boulder in the 80's with back problems.  He had a harness made with a metal back frame and back pack padded hip belt. The strap went over the top of the metal frame and his guitar was supprted by the frame and padded hip belt, no weight on his shoulder or back. He may have just taken the whole assembly out of a large back pack and modified it a little. It seemed to work for him, maybe you could have something like that made for you.

...but if you do end up selling your S1, I suggest you check out an Orion, they are light weight and have great tone.  I love mine, which has vol/pan/filter/3-way Q, and use it often.

Series I short scale is a fantastic bass, though slightly neck divey, which you can get used to.
