Fraudulent "second chance offer" for Alembic Elan
« on: November 09, 2004, 03:07:10 PM »
I read in another thread about ebay - members receiving bogus offers after having been outbid. How ?bout this one: I had an offer in the mail today to buy an Alembic Elan I had bid on about three weeks ago. The name of the ebay member was not the one of the seller from the UK but seemed to come from France. I was asked not to use the sender?s address anyway but reply to yet another email address... Now here?s the punchline: I did buy the bass already, in fact I just played it in rehearsal - so what are they trying to sell???
For the hell of it I mailed as I was asked to do and expressed great interest in buying the Elan, but asked for a serial number, as noone was given in the auction - let?s see what they?ll say to that.
I?ll keep you posted!

...this guy seems to be really keen on selling me this bass - again: I mailed him a fake address, told him, he should know my ebay ID as he contacted me via ebay and asked again for the serial number. Here?s his reply:

Ebay will contact you with payment and shipping instructions ...

For additional details regarding the product look on ebay ITEM NUMBER #3754090405

...I?m looking forward to seeing those payment instructions... I put ebay on his track earlier today, but I?m not sure if they can do anything about this. Keep playing those Alembics, it?s bedtime for me now. (...and I?ll have to wait for my payment instructions anyway...)

I?m supposed to send him the money by Western Union - like hell I will. If this Giles-Martin-guy is an innocent bystander who get?s used by somebody entirely else: my apologies.

I got a similar type of e-mail in regards to a Chapman Stick I lost an auction on. I didn't feel comfortable with the way the system was set up. The same use this e-mail to reply, don't press the reply button type of thing. After several e-mails I said ... for the second time that I was sorry if this was on the up and up but I don't feel comfortable with the process and I'm going to pass. I got a reply saying WISE CHOICE ... GOOD LUCK! I thought it was a wise guy reply however it could have been a scammer who knew he was found out. God ... makes buying from e-bay and any type of not in person barter a frightning thing! I almost got robbed over $1,800.00!

I got one of these after I lost an auction for a fretlight guitar.  The seller, in England, claimed to have two of them.  He described the type of wood and finish, even a dent or two.  I e-mailed back saying I might be interested and asked which model number.  He e-mailed me back that it was

a top of the range model in maple top, fully bound. The model number I will forward to you.

Never heard from him again.

Bill, tgo

Hey, I know that bass. I bought it here in the netherlands but it just wasn't my bass. Except for one small ding, there was nothing wrong with it, but just not my type of bass. Anyway, this bass travels around the world on its own. It has been on ebay some time ago, was sold to somebody here in the netherlands who sold it again after a few weeks for the same reason as I did. He made a little profit on it, I didn't, I've used it during two gigs and decided I would go for something I really wanted, an old small body series I or II. So on ebay again for the third time, sold it and couldn't believe my eyes when it was on ebay again, but for a different price, way overpriced I must say. I don't know if anybody has seen the first ebay selling price? Here's a link to my thread when I offered it to clubmembers. There are more thread about this bass.

Hi Manfred,

I?ve checked your thread - it?s the one! I bought it from goonoofish (who was very nice to deal with, great chap with excellent communication), but as I payed only what I had bid plus a little paypal it added up to pretty much exactly what he had payed for it, so it?s alright for me (the Euro is pretty strong at the moment, so that helped me go for it). I played it in rehearsals and will use it live on Saturday for the first time, I really dig the sound and the playability - certainly doesn?t beat my Series but it?s way easier on my small shoulders... :o)

By the way: this Giles Martin contacted me again to press things a bit - bad luck for him, I won?t buy the same bass twice...
