6-string Epic on Craigs
« on: July 01, 2016, 10:58:02 AM »
Saw this Epic on Craigslist in Chicago area http://chicago.craigslist.org/wcl/msg/5660008644.html.  Looks like it's in nice condition at a great price!

I've been thinking about waiting to find a Europa 5 or 6-string but the price of this Epic makes me curious.  I'd rather have a neck-through and I'm not sure about how I'd feel about the loss of the filter electronics.

I'm wondering what opinions are out there about tone adjustment with and without the filter and how much does 34 versus 32 inch scale make a difference in B-string tone and overall playability?  I have a medium scale, 5-string Spoiler and think it might be too much stretch to go to 34-inch.

Something to keep in mind Dan - it's a bit of a sardine-can, but the simple bass/treble Epic/Orion electronics can be upgraded with a Filter and Q. Here's Flip's Orion thread where he did just that... http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=8798.0

That's a pretty nice-looking Epic sixer... I bet with the improved balance and ergonomics, the extra 2 inches of scale length would be less of an issue.

That's an interesting thought, Greg!  I have been reticent about 34-inch scale because I'm probably keeping my medium scale 5-string Spoiler unless I find a reasonably priced 5 or 6-string Europa to upgrade.  Not having played the 34's, I'm wondering how strange it will feel going back and forth.  If I invest in a Europa at a higher expense level, I would then sell the Spoiler.

The Spoiler is great and the string spacing is about 16mm at the bridge, and I typically play it with a pick.  I'm thinking the 18mm spacing would be better for finger playing.  I'm also looking to have another bass setup with flats for a different tone, of which I'm thinking Tomastik Infeld would be the strings of choice.  I had Chromes on my Persuader for a different tone from the ProSteels on the Spoiler but thought they sounded to muddy.

I'm just dreaming here and really appreciate your input!
