(x) 1996 Series II 5 string in 5A Quilted Maple 9610208
« on: May 13, 2016, 04:36:18 PM »
My second Alembic in less than a year ...

I stare at her in disbelieve every time I see her - just stunning.
There is a long (very old) thread with great photos here: http://club.alembic.com/index.php?topic=8258.0

I would love to know all there is to know about her including any service history - e.g. has in received "the upgrade"?

The custom electronics - bass and treble for each PU - have been discussed in the other thread a bit but I would still love to know the specifics like center frequencies of the controls, etc., if that info is still available.

Thank you Mica for looking it up.
Cheers,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

Here's the details I found in the file for your bass:

top: Quilted Maple, bookmatched to center
accent: Purpleheart laminate
body: Mahogany with center Purpleheart pinstripe
back: Quilted Maple
neck: 7-piece Maple and Purpleheart
scale: 34" long
fingerboard: Ebony, custom 1.875 x 2.80 width
inlays: abalone ovals
side position markers: red LEDs
pickups: Alembic SC-1 with HX
pickup placement: neck pickup 1.5" from end of fingerboard
controls: Series II with bass and treble cut and boost controls for each channel (40Hz & 6KHz), 5-pin and 1/4" outputs
finish: polyester gloss
originally made for: Dixie Music as a custom order
birthday: not recorded, but likely September 1996

I don't have a record of the upgrade, but if you peek at the preamp card on the backplate, there will be some trimpots with blue stickers over the slot if it had the upgrade.

Thank you so much, dear Mica!
Hope you didn't get too dusty digging so far into the past  :)

The specs for the bass and treble controls are very interesting - no wonder they don't do much when I have the filters deployed with a generous application of Q.

The PU name sounds mysterious - Alembic SC-1 with HX.

I looked at the preamp card, but there are only the trim pots without stickers - see attachment - so i guess this one is not upgraded yet.

The original owner's name (John) still graces the hardshell case :)

Btw, I do enjoy playing this bass tremendously!

Thank you again!
Oliver

Oliver:

As I think you and I discussed, I bought the bass from the original owner, who was very knowledgeable about it and a good guy, besides.  I recall that he told me that the bass was originally built as either the first or one of the first basses that had the noise upgrade, so perhaps the upgrade happened before Alembic got into the habit of marking upgraded basses with the blue stickers.  FWIW, it's as quiet as my upgraded basses, although some of my pre-upgrade basses are dead quiet, too.  Also, the owner told me that after receiving the bass he thought about redoing the treble control frequencies and actually discussed it with someone at Alembic but never followed through. Had I used the bass more than I did I probably would have done that, using Alembic's standard bass and treble center frequencies as my guide.

Glad you are enjoying the bass!

Hey Steve,
Thanks for chiming in.
I actually had not been aware of the "upgrade" when we discussed the bass, so no, it did not come up. It's great to know though that it has the upgraded electronics - and yes, very true, it is dead quiet.

I might revisit the treble/bass frequencies once I get more familiar with the plethora of tones the dual variable Q and filters in concert with the PU pan can create. I wonder what it would take to change the tone control frequencies.

I looked at the preamp card, but there are only the trim pots without stickers - see attachment - so i guess this one is not upgraded yet.

These trim pots are the regular ones for adjusting the gain and the humbalance, so there won't be protective stickers on them. John's were the first one upgraded, and I think both of these got it. Hmm, I'm not really sure. I do know the Walnut one got upgraded. Anyway, if you're not experiencing directional or high frequency noise, just enjoy away!

Oh? Can the mods be hidden somewhere else? There are lots of 'cavities' in that bass ;)
Maybe it was so good to begin with that it is quantifiably unmodifiable?
I like a good mystery ...

In this topic you can see the extra trimpots (which should be covered by a blue sticker, the card in the pic has the stickers removed) Click here
