Set neck?
« on: December 08, 2004, 06:22:58 PM »
How is a set neck attached to the body?  I've looked all over the website and can't find anything that really describes the process.  Is the neck glued into the socket routed in the body?  Is there some sort of fastener used that isn't visible from the outside?

The set necks are glued in. Don't believe Alembic uses  mechanical fastners on any of their necks.

AFAIK it's some kind of dove-tail joint, and it's most definitely glued. It would be nice to see some photos or drawings - not too sure what the interlocking parts look like before being joined.

Val or Mica, any chance of a photo or two showing the set neck process?  Owning an Orion, I too am curious about the neck construction.

Here is the thread for Jeff's Excel.  The pics might be helpful.

Thanks for the thread Dave, some great pictures.
I wonder what kind of glue is used since there are no fasteners or dovetail joints used? I know the necks are rock solid, I am just curious about the method.

Thanks Dave for connecting us to that thread.  That is just what I was wanting to see.  Must be a heck of a glued joint.  What a beautiful bass.  Quite a collection of basses he has.
Thanks,
Rich

Alphetic resin i.e. white glue. Sorry for spelling, but that is the stuff. It's the same glue used on body laminates, fingerboards and neck laminates. Simple, yet outrageously strong.

Yeah they hold the entire bass together... Without the glue what would we deal with?

One thing my brain cannot wrap itself around in those pictures is that it looks like there's the same kind of pocket as for a bolt-on neck, and the neck doesn't have any special features either. How does one make a dove-tail join out of that?
