Author Topic: Eden 4x10T vs. Acme B4? (Read 270 times)

Suggestions for a 4x10 cabinet lighter than my 95 pound Eden 4x10T (NOT the XLT) that sounds as good/loud/clean, etc.?

I heard Acmes are great cabs (both performance and price). Having never heard an Acme cab, how does the Acme B4 compare with the Eden 4x10T - tone, volume, durability etc. I need about as much volume as the Eden, though. I called Andy Lewis and he recommended a 4ohm Low B4 ($695) -- but, only if I use one cabinet. I shouldn't need more than a 4x10 now, as I don't play out that often.

My impression from posts of the Acme sound is: clean tone without coloration, flat response throughout, and bigger low end than Eden. How about volume-wise? Studio sounding rigs are great in the studio, but on the gig, I need volume because I play with a very loud, but great, guitar player. My basses are Modulus Q5, Modulus VJ4, and G&L ASAT fretless.

I've played my trusty old (white logo) Eden 4x10T 8ohm 500W cab for 15 years. For louder gigs, I coupled it with an Eden 2x10T 250W 8ohm cab. I recently bought an F1X/PLX1602 and love it - 1000W into 8ohms. Sounds a LOT better than my SWR SM400 ever did. So I'm selling the 210T (55 lbs.) and SM400, because I won't use or need them now.

Acme vs. Avatar, EA, Aguilar, etc.?

Well , what i can say is that i don't know acme b4 at all........I'm just able to say that i 've purchased new ebs rig : sooooo goooooood : fafner head + 2 - 4x10 cabs . It really sounds great , clear , punchy ! The only bad thing about those cabs is their weight indeed...and their price...but it really worths it , be quite certain ; i come from trace elliott and ampeg . Ampeg was really good but once i've heard ebs , it was time to change...i've tried eden a couple of times also but it didn't leave me as good feeling as ampeg for example , probably because i didn't have too much time to try . First the bad news: Even though the B4 is the most efficient Acme (96dB) and will handle more continuous power than the Eden (700W vs 540W) it is not as loud as the Eden. That won't be an issue if you have plenty of headroom with the Eden - but could be a problem if you are running out of steam with the Eden.

Now the good news: Hugely better bottom end and top end - and flatter response across the range. You may find you don't need to drive the Acme as hard as the Eden because of the better low end response (especially with the 5 string). The Eden is down 3dB at 80Hz vs 41 Hz (low E) for the Acme. This might offset the efficiency difference between the speakers - depending on your playing style.

And you'll save about 15lbs weight.

Durability is what you'd expect of a pro speaker - there are Acme's around that have been solidly used for 10 years now.

I recommend you take advantage of Acme's 2 week trial period - they don't get many back. I think you may find the purity of tone and great bottom end addictive - espcially given your choice of basses.

Thanks, Dave. I have all the symptoms but I didn't know my condition had a name and an acronym. I also have STOP (Spousal Termination Of Purchasing). Anyone else suffering from STOP?

P.S. In case there are any other STOP sufferers out there, I have found that Smooch-Anal therapy provides temporary relief of STOP. In my experience, several courses of the therapy may be needed for Alembic Acquisition. But it can be relatively painless. My Epic required only new siding on the garage.

Have you checked out the EDEN D410XST?

If you want serious POWER and frequency response, it handles 1000 watts RMS and has a 36Hz to 14KHz frequency response @ 8 ohms.

I have yet to see anything top that!

Good idea. Have you, or anyone you know, heard the 410XST? How do the lows compare with the Acme B4? The Eden cab is 95 lbs. compared to Acme 78 lbs. And a lot more money than the Acme, unless I could find a used XST. Thanks so much for your time and thought.

Hi Dave,

I've never heard the EDEN XST or the ACME B4, but I personally use a D410XLT (I drive it with a DC210XLT Metro amplifier) and I really, really like it. If the XST is an upgrade to the XLT, it sounds (at least on paper) like a real beast. I've been considering one for a while (I'll probably get it soon). I'm just deciding what EDEN amp I want to drive it. I'm considering a stereo setup this time.
I've always been a huge fan of EDEN amps and cabinets, so my mind's already made up.

You and I use the same exact rig and like you I am trying to figure out which way to go with a stereo set-up. When you finally narrow your choices I would be interested in what you have come up with. I too am a huge Eden fan.
