If any of you Bobs or Bills or Richs get to the show tell The band they need to come to Europe pretty soon - edinburgh would be a good start followed by belgium. We really don't get enough of the 'greats' over here.

Hey Bob TOB

I know what you are thinking when you mention the line-up being an odd trio however the only odd one in my opinion is Billy Cobham. Stanley on acoustic can be more exciting than when he is on electric and Billy has tamed it down through the years. I once saw him do an acoustic set and I think he forgot that the other players were not playing electric instruments and I found him to be quite overbearing to the rest of the trio. The last time I saw him he was much more in the pocket and playing as a jazz drummer should and to be honest his bass player actually stole the show. Let me know what your thoughts are, I'm interested to see if we are of the same opinion.

Yeah, you got it - Cobham seemed like the odd man out, to me.

Stanley can certainly do this. On a good day - on upright - he can make my top ten list (electrics rarely make it in there, though I always waver a bit on Jaco, just because he was so unique). But I'd be a little nervous that together, Cobham and Clarke could pull Tyner off-center.

Last time I saw Tyner, Avery Sharpe was on bass (forget who was drumming), and he was great. Mostly upright, but he did a few songs on electric (don't remember what kind), and fit in tastefully.

I haven't really followed Cobham, and I guess the fact that (as far as I know) I only have him on one recording says something about my personal tastes. Spectrum was a decent album, and there are a few tracks on there that I still enjoy, but I've tended to think of him as a power/fusion player, and I seem to favor a more musical approach, ala DeJohnette.

Of course, given that we've recently lost Elvin Jones and Tony Williams (not sure if Williams and Tyner ever played together, though it seems nearly certain), maybe pickings are slim.

If Cobham has tempered, as you suggest, can you recommend any recordings?

I would definately recommend Live at the Greek.  Stan and Billy even include a great rendition of Stratus.  Stan also dispells any doubt whether he is a power upright bass player.  Cobham isn't exactly subdued but he plays tastfully.

Well, this event is selling out quickly.  We couldn't get the 8PM Thursday show, had to settle for the 10PM.  Fri-Sat-Sun show up as sold out, but, as of now, tickets are still available for all Tue/Wed shows and 10PM Thu.

I stand (or sit) corrected - I also have Live at the Greek, and Stratus is good. Maybe when the rest of my hi-fi finally returns (from repairs/upgrades) I'll try actually listening to the drummer...

Too bad about the sell out, Bob. Tyner has been doing an annual two week stint here for years now, so it gets a little extra attention. But if I had to choose, I'd always go for the second set anyway.

Don't necessarily believe the web site.  When I checked it the Friday late show was listed as sold out.  I called Yoshi's directly and they still had tickets.  So I would try calling them (real human to human real time communication - what a concept!)

Anybody else going to the Friday late show?

When we called, we tried everything short of outright bribery to get tickets to the Thursday 8PM show.  We'll be eating dinner at 8 instead.  Does any sound from the show leak into the dining area so we can hear a double show even if we can't actually see it?

Since we fly in from the east coast on Wednesday, I was afraid to book that night lest we fall asleep and snore during someone's solo.

Don't think I've ever been in the restaurant during a show, but best guess is you won't know anything is going on. They've got the bar/lobby area stuck in between, and you'd hear a little there, but it pretty well buffers the restaurant, which also has some quiet background music.

Besides, it's worth concentrating on the food. Just ask them when the line will start to form so you get a good choice of seating.

Even for the late show, you get to select your seats when you arrive for dinner.  No waiting in lines for us!

Darrell:

I'll be arriving at 8:45 for dinner and then on to the 10:00 p.m. show.  I'll be with a cute blonde, (yea, she's my wife), and will be wearing my Alembic T-shirt.  Come up and say hi.
