Mid '70s California Jam?
« on: April 02, 2005, 09:50:29 AM »
I've been meaning to ask this for quite a while.  I'm sure many of you remember California Jam that was on TV in about '74 or '75.  Probably some of you were there.  Does anyone know where I can get the DVD?  I'd love to see it again.  All the major acts were there.

Thanks, Jonathan.
That site sells the CJ '74 ELP set (along with ELP at some early '70s live stuff).  ELP is one of my all-time favorites so that was one I especially wanted to see.  It doesn't say what Deep Purple songs are on the DVD so I'll have to check into it a bit more.
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,

No problem. ELP is also one of my all time favorites. I'd give away all my guitars to be one-tenth as talented a keyboard master as Keith Emerson.

I agree.  I have mainly been a bass fan all my life.  But there are a few non-bassists that I have loved listening to.  Emerson is one of them.
I remember in the mid '70s there was this group of critics (probably just jealous of KE) who said he was just fast and sloppy.  Then Leonard Bernstein said he thought KE was probably the best young, classical pianist around.  I don't remember the critics saying much after that.
I think I'm going to get the ELP CJ '74 DVD.  My family isn't that crazy about their wilder stuff, but I'll gladly sneak off by myself and watch it.

Thanks, Tony.  I think I'll wait until June 13 and order the one from Noble.  It is 250 minutes on 2 DVDs for just a little bit more money.  It has just about everything I can think of on it.

I used to own a beta (0_0; tape of the Deep Purple set - let's see if I can remember the setlist:

Burn
Might Just Take Your Life
Lay Down Stay Down
Mistreated
Smoke on the Water
You Fool No One
Space Truckin'

OK, I cheated, there's a review of a new CD release of the soundtrack here. (Actually, I got all but Lay Down Stay Down, which wasn't even in the video!) If you can find a copy it's classic - it's the show where Ritchie Blackmore smashes his guitar into a big camera, has his amp (and hair!) set on fire, and throws said burnt amp and smashed guitar into the audience.
