Really cool thread! It's very interesting to see what kind of instrumental background has led folks to the finest guitars and basses on the planet. I'd like to consider myself multi-talented, although I seem to have more 'multi' than 'talent.' I started off playing piano in elementary school, picked up alto sax around the same time. Moved to bari sax in junior high, and bridged the gap with tenor in high school. I played bari for the Empire State Youth Jazz ensemble for a couple years, and those were some of the toughest charts I've played. I was in choir about the time I started piano, and I eventually toured Europe with a choir between my junior & senior years of high school. It was actually sophomore year of high school when I really started to get into bass & guitar, originally playing on my older brother's Alvarez acoustic guitar, and his Epic 5. That Epic was my first exposure to Alembic instruments. Since graduation (2002), I've picked up mandolin, banjo, upright bass (thanks Ed!), Moog synth, rhodes, and just recently I started getting into electric guitar. I just picked up a Misato/Chushin Bambu guitar which was made in '78 and supposedly modeled after Alembic instruments. It was constructed in Japan with bamboo as the main neck component, and it plays better than any electric I've ever had my hands on. My paychecks always go to one of two things: bills and instruments, which leaves me kinda hungry, but at least my hands are occupied all the time.
