New Knobs....continued
« on: August 14, 2003, 06:26:44 AM »
Hi All,

Here's the most recent update of the work that Roger of THG Knobs did for my Brown Bass. Dig the little tribute to The Who.

Hey Stoney, nice knobs!!.Love the Brown bass model.A very earthy and warm kinda vibe. What kind of strings are you using? They appear to be very gold in color. Are they Maxima Golds or do I need to adjust my monitor?
                         Mike
P.S. What does that bass sound like with that wood combination?

Only in this forum could you share pictures of your knobs with another man and not be obscene.

That's the nicest looking BB I've seen. Beautiful....

Hi all, thanks for the comps.
Mike...Yes those are Maxima Golds. I found 8 sets on ebay for 30.00 each and though I'd better scoop those up. I'm conservative with them. I'll take them off and put my Alembics on for practicing etc. Tone-wise, this bass just thunders when you crank the low end. It can be somewhat pushed to get that cool nasal sound or that razor-edge John Entwistle sound as well. It offers a natural thick low end.

Future plans are to get side LED's and a treble boost/cut switch. As you can see, I've already altered the electronics. The solid teardrop knob is a master volume knob. Switches (left to right) are bridge Q, Neck Q, Bass cut/boost

I'll post a full pic early next week.

That's the nicest brown bass I've seen.  Roger's been doing great inlay work lately.  If you haven't already done so, you might want to send him that photo for his gallery.

Yeah, he went on a fishing trip for the week.  He's really gotten into the two-tone and inlaid knobs since he got his CNC.

I have the distinction of being his first Alembic customer.  I showed him an Elan 5 on eBay one day, and he said You've GOT to get that bass!  The bass was so gorgeous I had to get it.  After considering various ideas, I decided to go with cocobolo knobs, to match the top.  He was really excited about making knobs for it, so he searched for cocobolo blanks that would make the best match for the top.  After going through about 10 blanks, I made my selection.  He made 3 sets, refining each one until we had the set that currently adorns my beloved Elan:

Hey, Joe,  when are you bringing that beast over here so we can buff the marr marks out of it?

Thanks for all the great compliments.  I really appreciate it when others enjoy my work.

Stoney, your bass is on the front page of my new web site.  It is not yet live but is looking very cool.  Check it out at www.bdsgn.com/thg

Later!

Joe, those cocobolo knobs are stunning. I've admired your bass on the site.  It's obvious that Roger, like the folks at Alembic, have extremely high standards for themselvs. It's only natural that it will reflect well in their work.

Roger, I'll check out the page. Someone has requested a full shot of the brown bass. I'll send you one as well.

The new site look great, Roger.  As with Alembic, THG's business seems to be leaning more toward basses than guitars.  Maybe we bassists have a finer eye for detail ;-)
