The Kids Are Alright
« on: October 02, 2003, 12:13:34 PM »
Had dinner with the band last night. The drummer showed up with The Kids Are Alright DVD. Very cool. On the second disc (special stuff) John is totally isolated (audio and video) while playing WGFA and Baba. Man there is just a certain sound to Alembics that can NOT be matched.  Also included a different camera angles for a few songs.

BUY IT!

That shot in 'Kids Are Alright' when they hit that chord to begin the final chorus in WGFA and Townshend comes flying across the stage, lands on his knees as they hit, just slays me every time I see it.

The footage of JE walking around his home (all the basses along the staircase and balcony !), especially trap-shooting LPs off his porch is just soooo country gentry/English.

BTW, has anyone been watching the Martin Scorcese/PBS 'Blues' series this week?  Utterly fabulous ! ! !

I've spent the afternoon listening to The John Entwistle Band - Left For Live Deluxe CD which I have finally managed to import to the UK.

I love it!  I think the production on it is amazing, not to mention the playing!  The whole CD is alive - if you haven't already got it, it's money well spent.  Trust me!

I've seen some of it, but unfortunately haven't been able to see much of it.  What I have seen has been really good.  Did see most of the episode last night with the Apple session and especially enjoyed reliving early British blues history.  Alexis Korner, John Mayall, Peter Green, and of course Eric Clapton.  Jeff Beck continues to be a pleasure to hear.

Hi Guys,
yes the Kids video is great. I am still waiting for the DVD to come here to Germany.
As for the My Wife sequence with all the basses hanging around you can really see some of his famous basses and many that had already been auctioned some years ago. In the Who are you studio sequence you can see the red Explorerbird bass buildt by Peter Cook. When you look close at the body of this bass it has the same body and angles like his later Alembic Spyders. I told you before that there are significant body differences between his original ones, the Exploiters and even our Spyders now. On another DVD I have (something from Argentina I think) there is the video sequence of You better you bet where JOhn is playing his Spyder with the V-headstock. You really could see this V-headstock Spyder very rarely used by John. Does anyone know where some of his basses had been sold to?
(I mean in the last auction: the two Spyders, the V, the Explorerbird, the Gibson Flying V bass and the Discoverer bass)

Well ...I wish I could.
But ...to be honest. I never made a bass-reflection listening The Who when I was young (looooooooo-ooong time ago ...well ...however  ...I can always play that trick with the sunglasses Brothet Werner gave). We were at our attick at home where my younger brother had his studio (he was in art-school) and the triple LP (you remember the black disc with the hole in the middle where you need a pick-up for (no ...idiot ....not an pickup but a pickup ...a turntable ...a ....jeeez) of Tommy with that mysterious booklet. One of the first LP's you could as well read as hear.
Our mind drifted always to Pete Townsend. It was only by joining this club that I took more notic of JE (sorry Oliver) so you see ...better late than never.

Well, the copy of The Kids Are Alright - Special Edition finally bothered to arrive from the States on Friday.  Worth the wait?  Worth the cost to see the Ox-Cam on Won't Get Fooled Again, never mind the wait!

Region 1 disc in NTSC format so some trepidation putting the disc into a supposedly hackable DVD player that should support NTSC region 1 discs, into a TV that should support NTSC feeds!  All was well, no noticeable loss of picture quality.

All I can say is that if you like The Who - and you don't have this and you live in a region 1 DVD area - why not? If you live in other DVD regions and you can't play region 1 DVDs, buy equipment that does!!!!!

Hi Rog, hi Guys,
I heard that the Kids Special DVD?s will be released in the UK with Code 2 around April 2004.
As I have no equipment for code 1 I think I have to wait.......

Oliver (or should I say Spyderman?),

It will definately be worth the wait. Those isolated tracks of JAE will make it all worthwhile. After I watched it I wasn't sure whether to cry and sell all my gear or take out my Exploiter and practice all the more......

Hi Paul TGO,
yes I know this feeling!
But I think the best you can do is:
practicing and listening as much as possible
to John and of course watch those great videos or DVD?s.
